Per usual, ‘The Hill’ will be rocking for some Friday night football, but there will be plenty of extra energy in the stadium this week.
And that’s because undefeated Gulf Shores is paying a visit to Spanish Fort for a matchup that will go a long way in determining the top seed in their region, and in turn, who gets the upper hand come playoff time.
The Toros have dropped one game this season but similarly remain unblemished in district play, making this a marquee matchup that carries with it plenty of implications.
This will also be somewhat of a clash of styles, as the Dolphins possess plenty of dynamic skill-position talent and are scoring just under 38 points per game, while the Toros are allowing just over nine points per contest thanks to their stingy defense.
Thus, something has to give Friday night on The Hill, and the victor will likely set itself up with a highly favorable postseason pathway.
Here are the players to keep an eye on, keys to the game and other notes to know ahead of kickoff:
Carter Davis
Gulf Shores | Wide Receiver | Senior
Notable Stats: 38 catches, 550 receiving yards, 17 carries, 123 rushing yards, 9 total TDs
The Dolphins boast plenty of high-caliber offensive talent, but Davis is certainly the headliner.
Fresh off a two-touchdown performance against Elberta last week, the West Virginia commit leads Gulf Shores in receiving, although head coach Mark Hudspeth and his staff often try to get Carter the ball in a variety of ways to best utilize his athleticism.
Gulf Shores | Defensive Tackle | Junior
Notable Stats: 38 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries
Gulf Shores’ front seven has been a force throughout the season thus far, and Ervin is at the forefront of that reality.
Holding a plethora of collegiate offers already, the junior is a true game-wrecker in the middle of the Dolphins’ defense. Ervin is nearly impossible to block with just one man, and he’s even managed to score a pair of touchdowns off turnovers in 2026.
Jaylyn “JJ” Thibodeaux
Spanish Fort | Quarterback | Senior
Notable Stats: 679 passing yards, 497 rushing yards, 17 total touchdowns
The heartbeat of the Spanish Fort football team lines up behind center, as veteran quarterback Jaylyn “JJ” Thibodeaux has already willed his team to multiple wins this fall.
A tough dual-threat athlete, Thibodeaux has consistently sparked the Toros when they needed it most, and he’ll be counted upon to produce another gutsy performance this week.
Can Spanish Fort control the pace of play?
As mentioned before, this game features a clash of play styles between the methodical, defensive-minded Toros and the up-tempo, explosive Dolphins.
Therefore, both teams will likely look to set the tone early on, with Spanish Fort hoping to limit the amount of possessions and chew up clock while Gulf Shores aims to run as many plays as possible. Whoever’s style wins out will likely emerge victorious.
Will the Toro defense be able to rattle (and contain) Major Hudspeth in the pocket?
One of the primary reasons Gulf Shores is undefeated has been the play of sophomore quarterback Major Hudspeth, who has stepped in as a first-year starter and largely excelled.
The coach’s son has impressed with his arm, but an X-factor for the Dolphins has been Hudspeth’s ability to scramble out of the pocket and pick up chunk gains downfield.
As a result, the Toros will need to ensure that they remain disciplined when rushing upfield, not creating lanes for Hudspeth to escape into.
Who can step up and provide a needed boost for the home side?
The Hill’s crowd will give Spanish Fort a sizable lift, but the Toros will also need players to step up individually in order to spring somewhat of an upset.
Thibodeaux can’t be relied upon exclusively to make things happen offensively, and the likes of Ya’Lin Lee, Ford Turner and Devin McKenzie are more than capable of creating some explosive plays.
If the Spanish Fort defense could also win the turnover battle, that’d give the home side a leg-up that could prove to be the difference.
It’s the time of the season when every game seems to take on an added level of importance, and this matchup is one that locals have circled on their calendars.
It’s safe to say that unbeaten Gulf Shores enters this game as a slight favorite, but Spanish Fort has exceeded expectations throughout its campaign and will be eager to do so again this week.
The gritty, physical Toros will likely look to drag the Dolphins into deep waters, keeping this game low-scoring and forcing the visitors to truly value every possession. If Spanish Fort can accomplish all of that and receive strong performances from 1-2 offensive players in addition to Thibodeaux, this one will come down to the final quarter, which is when Chase Smith’s squad has excelled.
But overall, it’s hard to bet against the firepower that Gulf Shores possesses, and after Hudspeth’s squad already proved it can go on the road and win a big game against Saraland earlier this season, the Dolphins should be well-equipped to handle the challenge ahead.
The Dolphins (7-0, 5-0) and Toros (6-1, 5-0) will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.
