Several programs wrapped up their regular seasons this week across soccer pitches in Baldwin County, and a few local teams claimed area titles.
With playoffs just under two weeks away, let's dive into which teams made the rankings this week and how many programs took home area gold.
BOYS RANKINGS
Again, Foley returns to the 7A boys poll at the No. 8 spot. The Lions split the week 1-1, taking down Alma Bryant before falling to area rival Fairhope. Now the 24th-best team in the state according to MaxPreps, Foley soccer eyes a state tournament appearance after losing the area title.
Just down in the 6A polls, Gulf Shores still remains the highest-ranked county team at No. 7 following a 0-0 draw with Orange Beach and a loss to area rival Spanish Fort. The Dolphins’ season has not come to a close as they prepare for the playoffs later this month as well.
Winning the 6A Area 2 championship for a fifth consecutive season, the Spanish Fort Toros come in as the No. 9-ranked program in the 6A poll. The Toros handled Elberta last week before downing Gulf Shores to claim the title.
In the 5A poll, St. Michael Catholic drops one spot to No. 6 after a 6-3 loss to Fairhope early last week. The Cardinals will have a chance to lock up the 5A Area 1 crown this week when they take on St. Luke’s.
Falling out of the 4A rankings were the Orange Beach boys after holding a spot in the top 10 all season long until this point. The Makos drew with the Dolphins last week, as previously mentioned, and also took down Elberta.
Still unranked in the 7A poll are the Fairhope boys. The Pirates have now won seven straight matches, including wins last week over a ranked St. Michael and Foley — the win over the Lions clinching the 7A Area 1 title for the Pirates. Fairhope is now ranked the 12th-best team in Alabama according to MaxPreps, the highest among all county programs.
GIRLS RANKINGS
With still no girls programs ranked in the 7A poll, Spanish Fort again headlines the week, sitting at No. 4 in the 6A rankings. The Lady Toros have climbed two spots from the previous week to earn their highest ranking of the season thus far, as they closed out the regular season with a win over Gulf Shores and a draw with St. Luke’s. Similar to the boys, the Spanish Fort girls claimed the 6A Area 2 crown with the win over the Dolphins and finished the year 18-2-3.
In the 5A poll, the St. Michael girls joined the boys squad as well with a No. 8 ranking. The Lady Cardinals did not play a game last week but will end the season this week with Bayshore Christian and St. Luke’s.
Down in 4A, the Lady Makos still reign supreme at the No. 1 spot. Orange Beach had a 3-0 week that included a win over an Elberta team that started the season 16-0. The Lady Makos end their season at 16-3-1, falling runner-up to St. Luke’s for the area title.
Bayshore Christian remains in the 1-3A girls poll as well, coming in at No. 8 with a 10-6-1 record. The Lady Eagles did not take the pitch last week but ended the year with St. Michael and Bayside early this week.
A story followed all year long, the Elberta girls never cracked the 5A poll despite their undefeated start and wins over ranked teams. The Lady Warriors have lost two in a row since that start and will end the year with Saraland next Monday. Elberta did claim the 5A Area 1 crown; however, that was secured prior to sweeping St. Michael.
The Fairhope girls took down Daphne and Robertsdale to claim the 7A Area 1 title and finished the area season 6-0, making a strong case to be a ranked program similiar to the Pirates boys squad. The Lady Pirates have now won six consecutive matches following a 2-4-2 start to the year but have not earned a ranking in the coaches poll this season.
