Two former Daphne High School football standouts are getting their shot at the NFL after signing undrafted free agent contracts following the 2026 NFL Draft.
Former Trojan wide receiver Malik McClain signed with the New York Jets, while former Daphne quarterback-turned-running back Trent Battle inked a deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
Starting with the Daphne graduate, Battle was one of Alabama’s top quarterback prospects coming out of high school in 2021. As a three-star recruit, he was rated the No. 1 quarterback in Alabama and the state’s No. 32 overall player in his class.
As a junior, Battle threw for 1,868 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 10 rushing scores. He was a Sports Illustrated All-America candidate as a senior and a three-sport athlete for the Trojans, competing in basketball and baseball.
Battle is also the son of former Major League Baseball outfielder Allen Battle, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics.
After signing with TCU, Battle redshirted as a freshman before making the switch from quarterback to running back. He remained with the Horned Frogs for his entire college career, a rarity in the transfer portal era.
Over four seasons, Battle rushed 127 times for 598 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. He also earned First-Team Academic All-Big 12 honors in both 2022 and 2023.
McClain did not graduate from Daphne, but instead spent his senior season at IMG Academy in Florida after three years with the Trojans' varsity teams.
During his senior year at IMG, McClain was a four-star recruit, ranked as the nation’s No. 267 overall prospect and No. 43 wide receiver in the 2021 recruiting class according to 247Sports. He helped lead IMG to a perfect 8-0 record during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, catching 15 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns.
Before transferring, McClain starred at Daphne, hauling in 26 receptions for 424 yards and five touchdowns during his final season with the Trojans. He was also a standout on the basketball court, averaging 13.9 points per game as a junior and 10.6 points for his prep career.
McClain began his college career at Florida State, where he totaled 396 receiving yards and five touchdowns across two seasons. He later transferred to Penn State for a year before finishing his collegiate career at Arizona State, where he spent his last two seasons. His best year came as a senior, when he posted 31 receptions for 441 yards for the Sun Devils — finishing his college career with 72 catches for 993 yards and eight touchdowns.
As former Daphne teammates, both McClain and Battle will look to showcase their talents throughout rookie minicamp and the preseason to earn spots on their respective franchises’ 53-man rosters. If they make the official rosters, McClain and Battle would become the ninth and 10th former Trojans to play in the NFL.
