DAPHNE — Newlyweds Heather and Justin Trollinger can’t get enough of each other — or the band Fly by Radio.

That’s partly why they traveled from Pensacola to hear their favorite band perform Friday night at the classic rock segment of “Music Under the Stars,” an inaugural event that was held Friday through Sunday.

The Trollingers liked Fly by Radio so much that the band played at a party following their church wedding and reception in Tuskegee on April 14.

“We had our after-party at a bar in Auburn. And we had them perform because we saw them play on our first date,” Justin Trollinger said.

A mutual friend helped introduce the couple to band members, he said.

“So, a couple of months later, one of Heather’s friends was friends with them and that’s how we got to know them,” he said.

Just hearing the band’s music was special, Heather Trollinger said.

So special, in fact, that they were the first couple of the evening to venture onto the dance floor.

The Trollingers were two of about 1,000 people who attended the three-day event, which fused classic rock, Motown and jazz sounds into a family outing on the civic plaza.

The Bulletin estimated that about 300 people attended Friday’s night of classic rock; about 800 attended Saturday’s Motown and Sunday’s jazz attracted about 1,000 people, according to Robyn Andrews, the city’s recreation programs coordinator.

“We had a really good crowd; I think by the end of the weekend word had really gotten out,” Andrews said, adding that the event — the first of its kind for the city — was a success, and will be back next year.

“We had a good crowd and I hope it just continues to grow over the years,” Andrews said. “It will be the second to last weekend of every April.”

Friday’s concert featured the U.S. Army Ground Forces band Classix, an 11-member pop/rock group. Fly by Radio, of Birmingham, also performed.

Saturday’s concert featured the sounds of Motown, featuring the Mobile band Powerhouse; and The Style Band, a seven-piece unit from Montgomery.

Sunday’s concert featured the New Orleans group The Dirty Dozen Brass Band; and the U.S. Army Jazz Guardians, an 18-member group.

Vendors sold concessions such as pizza and soft drinks at the event, which was sponsored by the City of Daphne, Alabama State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, AT&T, Baldwin County Sewer Service, Mercy Medical, Miller’s Grand Events, Original Oyster House, WHIL F.M. 91.3 and Workshops Etc! Inc.
