Another week of the prep soccer season comes and goes in Alabama, and once again the consistency of teams on the Gulf Coast is on full display on the pitch.
Positions in the rankings have not changed much, with the same nine teams from Week 6 coaches polls returning to the rankings. Still, there is a noticeable county team missing from the girls polls, while a few teams on the boys side start to make their case to become the 10th ranked team.
BOYS RANKINGS
Coming in as the only 7A ranked program in the county again is Foley after a 1-1 week. The Lions stayed put at No. 8 after losing to Daphne late last week before avenging that loss with a win over Southside.
The higher-ranked of the two 6A teams, Gulf Shores, fell one spot from No. 8 to No. 9 despite a 2-0 week. The Dolphins picked up a win over fellow 2024 state champion Bayside Academy before closing the week with an area win over Baldwin County. They will finish the season with three tough county matchups against Elberta, Orange Beach, and Spanish Fort.
Coming in behind them is Spanish Fort, as the Toros ride a five-game win streak into the No. 10 spot in the 6A polls. The Spanish Fort boys picked up a 2-0 win over Robertsdale last week and have taken down ranked St. Michael, Foley, and Gulf Shores this season.
Continuing to rise in the 5A polls is St. Michael, jumping from No. 8 to No. 4 for the biggest leap of the week among county teams. The Cardinals picked up wins over Elberta and Southside this past week and have victories over a pair of other ranked 5A programs this year.
Orange Beach has been trending in the wrong direction in the boys rankings, moving down two spots to No. 10 in the 4A polls. The Makos did get back on track last week with a pair of wins over Elberta and Alma Bryant as they look to rebound from a six-game winless skid prior to that.
Three unranked boys programs on the Eastern Shore have also been making noise on the pitch.
Bayshore Christian is riding a three-game win streak that has them at 7-4 and No. 1 in the 1-3A Area 1 standings. Fairhope’s boys have won seven of their last eight matches, with five of those coming against county opponents. And Daphne recently completed a sweep over ranked 7A rival Foley, as they begin to turn their season around down the stretch.
GIRLS RANKINGS
Staying put in the 6A girls poll is Spanish Fort at 16-2-2. The Lady Toros went 2-0 last week with a combined score of 20-0, earning the No. 6 spot for a second straight week in a crowded 6A class. They also come in at No. 17 in MaxPreps’ state rankings, just behind Orange Beach and up one spot from last week.
In the 5A polls, St. Michael Catholic also did not move, staying as the No. 7-ranked team. The Cardinals took a pair of tough losses to area opponent Elberta this past week, both coming down to the final whistle.
The Orange Beach girls continue to hold the top ranking in the county in both the coaches polls and MaxPreps’ state rankings. The Makos remain No. 1 in the 4A polls and have moved up to No. 16 in the state after a 2-0 week that included wins over Bayside and Foley.
Rounding out the girls rankings that did not change among county programs is Bayshore Christian at No. 4 in 1-3A. The Eagles split the week 1-1, coming up short in double overtime against Mobile Christian.
Once again, a week passes without the undefeated Elberta girls making the polls. The 16-0 Lady Warriors are coming off a week in which they swept 5A-ranked St. Michael, claiming the 5A Area 1 title as well. MaxPreps ranks Elberta as the No. 30 team in the state, and the Warriors have a date against higher-ranked Orange Beach to close the season.
