Drivers traveling along State Route 59 near Baldwin Preparatory Academy will soon see lower speed limits as part of a new safety effort led by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).
At the request of local school and public safety officials, ALDOT is reducing the speed limit approaching the school zone from 65 mph to 55 mph, and the speed within the zone from 55 mph to 40 mph, according to a news release. The changes are aimed at improving safety for students, staff and motorists along the busy stretch of highway.
The new limits will be enforced during peak school hours — from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. for morning drop-off and from 2 to 2:45 p.m. for afternoon pick-up.
“Slowing down might feel like a big deal — but through Baldwin Prep’s 1.1-mile school zone, dropping from 65 mph to 40 mph adds just 37 seconds to your drive. It could save a life, and that’s time well spent,” ALDOT Southwest Region spokesperson James Gordon said in the release.
Officials said the adjustments are part of an ongoing effort to improve traffic safety near schools throughout Baldwin County. Motorists are urged to stay alert, follow posted signage and watch for children and crossing guards during school hours.
