‘Music Under the Stars’ set for April 20-22 in Daphne

DAPHNE — Music lovers of all ages are in for a treat at the new “Music Under the Stars” weekend, set for April 20-22, at the Daphne Civic Complex Center.

It is free and open to the public. Performances are set for 6 to 9 p.m. daily. In the event of rain, it will be moved inside the center.

Robyn Andrews, Daphne Recreation Department programs coordinator, said she has already been getting calls from folks interested in the event.

It replaces the former annual jazz event and is an attempt to appeal to a broad spectrum of music lovers, Andrews said.

“We’ve not eliminated the jazz portion; It will be featured Sunday,” she said.

“But what we’ve also done is add even more, by also featuring an evening each for classic rock and Motown,” Andrews said.

Classic rock will be featured Friday night, followed by Motown on Saturday and Sunday’s jazz.

Scheduling of bands for this event began last August and has yielded some exciting results, she said.

For example, the U.S. Army Ground Forces band Jazz Guardians were popular when they performed locally and were a logical choice for this year’s premier event, Andrews said. They will perform Sunday.

“Since they were so popular, I also decided to book the U.S. Army Ground Forces band Classix for Friday evening’s classic rock concert,” she said.

Both of these military bands will be coming from Atlanta, Ga., Andrews said.

Birmingham’s Fly by Radio will also be featured on Friday’s classic rock concert.

Saturday’s Motown bands will be Powerhouse from Mobile and The Style Band.

Jazz lovers can enjoy The Dirty Dozen Brass Band on Sunday.

Food vendors will be: Naman’s Catering, Pizza Hut and Zaxby’s.

Pets, glass containers, alcoholic beverages, audio recording devices, video recorders and weapons are prohibited.

Event sponsors include: City of Daphne, Alabama State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, AT&T, Baldwin County Sewer Service, Mercy Medical, Miller’s Grand Events, Original Oyster House, WHIL F.M. 91.3 and Workshops Etc! Inc.
