Lyles appointed to fill council seat

SILVERHILL — Silverhill attorney Jared Lyles was appointed Monday to fill the remaining vacancy on the Silverhill Town Council.

Lyles, 27, a native of Fairhope, moved to Silverhill three years ago and said he is looking forward to give back to the community.

“I’m just glad to be able to help,” he said. “This community has been very good to me and my business and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to do some good here.”

Lyles and his wife Christie are expecting their first child “any day,” he said, a boy named Jackson.

Lyles fills the Place 3 council seat vacated by Tim Wilson, who was appointed mayor at the May 7 council meeting.

Wilson, 43, who was first elected to the Town Council in 1992, is the second appointee to fill the term of Mayor Allen F. Green, who resigned as mayor in June of 2006, citing health concerns.

Frankie Kucera, who had served as mayor from 1976 to 1984, was appointed as mayor in July of 2006, and resigned in March.

Wilson, a lifelong resident of Silverhill, went to Silverhill School and graduated from Robertsdale High School.

After graduating, he went to work for Silverhill’s utilities department, where he worked for five years. Since then, he has worked for Robertsdale Utilities. Wilson also serves as chairman for the town’s Planning and Zoning Board.

He and his wife, Darlene, have three children, Christopher, Kimberly and Timothy.

Council member Michael Allegri Jr. made the motion to appoint Lyles to the council, which was passed by a unanimous vote. Council member John Ullrich was not present at Monday’s meeting.

The council still must appoint a mayor pro-tem, who presides over meetings and conducts town business in the absence of the mayor.

The rest of Monday’s meeting was uneventful. The council voted to amend its purchase order policy, tabled two other measures and voted to deny another.

The council discussed updating its electric and plumbing permit fee schedule. Town clerk Bonnie McNeil was asked to draft a fee schedule based on Summerdale’s fee schedule, which will be presented to the next meeting June 4.

Debris removal specifications were also considered. The council reviewed other schedules and again plans are to have something ready for consideration by the next council meeting.

Under new business, the council voted to deny purchasing an ad in a newspaper publication, saying that they would rather devote their advertising dollars to the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s annual publication, which should come under consideration soon.
