LOXLEY, Ala. — The Loxley Town Council is looking to appoint a new council member after announcing the resignation of Michael Allegri Sr. at Monday night’s meeting.
Mayor Billy Middleton announced Monday that Allegri handed in his resignation effective Sept. 30 citing “personal reasons.” Allegri was not present at the meeting.
“We are asking anyone who is interested in filling the position to submit a written request to town hall,” Middleton said. They will also need to submit a short resume listing their qualifications for the position.
Deadline for submissions is Nov. 8, Middleton said. Pending the number of qualified applications received, plans are to appoint a new council member at the November meeting.
Allegri was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Derek Middleton in October 2010 and ran unopposed in the 2012 election. Before that he served two terms on the Baldwin County Commission, from 1988 to 1996.
Middleton also announced Monday that the council will postpone its November meeting from Nov. 11 to Nov. 18 because of the Veteran’s Day holiday.
In other business Monday the council voted to pass Resolution No. 2013-22 declaring a public nuisance on Sun Ridge Road.
A public hearing was held during s special meeting Sept. 30 citing that numerous complaints had been made by neighbors involving visible junk items in the yard. Property owners were given until the Oct. 14 council meeting to bring the property into compliance. Photographs taken Monday were presented to the council to show little had been done to clean up the area.
While property owners were not present at the time of the vote, they arrived toward the end of the meeting and told council members that cleanup had been conducted after the photographs were taken.
“I feel like we are being singled out,” said one of the property owners. “Other properties have tall grass growing and junk cars in the yard and nothing is being done to them.”
Council members assured the property owners that they were not trying to single anyone out.
“I sympathize with their situation,” said council member Richard Teal before the property owners arrived at the meeting. “I’m just not sure what else we can do at this point.”
Property owners have 15 days comply before the town will act to remove the nuisance at the property owners’ expense.
In other business Monday, the council:
• Donated $300 to the Robertsdale High School Future Business Leaders of America.
• Approved a tri-party agreement with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and Baldwin County Commission to house prisoners at the Baldwin County Corrections Facility in Bay Minette.
• Purchased netting for the baseball batting cages from Brunson Net & Supply Inc. in Foley at a cost of $1,455.76.
• Tabled a proposal to display the national motto “In God We Trust” in the town council chambers.
