Local filmmaker reaches goal for video project

SILVERHILL, Alabama – With just hours to go before reaching the deadline, it was announced that a local filmmaker had reached his goal to fund a video project.

“Music in the Round: Live From the Frog Pond at Blue Moon Farm,” is the project that Silverhill filmmaker Chris Helton has been working on for nearly a year.

The campaign on the website kickstarter.com had a goal of $18,000 and on Wednesday, with less than 24 hours to go before the project deadline, it was announced that Helton had met his goal.

As of Thursday, at the close of the project, there were 86 backers with more than $19,000 raised.

“It’s an all-or-nothing proposition,” Helton said in an earlier interview, adding that the money would only be available if the project reached its goal.

Beginning in September of 2012, Helton has filmed every Sunday Social performance on the outdoor stage running through the end of April.

The result is hundreds of hours of footage from more than 100 artists, including local popular artist Grayson Capps, who helped start the outdoor venue with property owner Cathe Steele three years ago. The footage includes performances, interviews with the artists and environmental footage.

“For me it’s a way for us to have an archive of what goes on here,” Steele said. “When we started this, I had no idea how special it would be. I’m not trying to brag, but it’s magical how everything came together in this place.”

Performances include the group Willie Sugarcapps, which was formed by Capps, Will Kimbrough, the duo Sugarcane Jane and guitarist Corky Hughes, through their performances together at the Frog Pond.

Helton has captured footage of Kinky Freeman, an internationally known singer/songwriter and author. He has also captured a performance of “This Land Is Your Land” featuring Sarah Lee Guthrie, daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of famed folk artist Woody Guthrie, who wrote the song.
