DAPHNE — The Daphne Public Library’s summer reading program is in full swing.
Week two of the program was “a tremendous success,” according to a library spokesperson.
Australian Puppeteer Bob Parsons of Walk-About Puppets headlined entertainment June 12 with Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
His life-size pop-up book and slap-stick performance “left the crowd in stitches,” a spokesperson said.
Also last week, juniors and preschoolers used their sleuthing skills to figure out the “mystery guest” during story time sessions.
The junior library detectives unveiled Daphne Mayor Fred Small and police Chief David Carpenter. After the reveals, Small and Carpenter shared information about their professions with the children and answered questions.
Preschoolers also had a visit from “Santa Claus,” who shared a story and spoke on the importance of healthy eating and exercise.
Santa-America, a national service charity founded in Daphne, has announced a 15-year program to reduce the weight of its more than 150 Santas by 25 percent.
“Santas must set an example for our children. Many of our Santas are way overweight (350-400 pounds) and are suffering from diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and bone/joint problems. Our volunteer Santas are among the best Santas in America with a special gift for visiting children suffering from chronic pediatric illnesses or post-traumatic stress disorder,” said Santa Ernest, founder of Santa-America.
“A leaner, more fit Santa will emerge in the next 15 years. It’s also much easier to get up and down chimneys!” he added.
Next at the summer reading program: Juniors and Preschoolers will “visit” Ancient Egypt today and tomorrow.
Through stories and crafts, library “detectives” will “investigate” the mysteries behind pyramids and mummies. Juniors will create their own pyramid while experimenting with hieroglyphics. Preschoolers will live the life of a Pharaoh as they design their own collars and cuffs.
Junior (kindergarten through second grade) sessions are on Wednesdays, 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Preschool (Older 3- to 5-year-olds) sessions are on Thursdays at 1 p.m, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The Daphne Public Library’s “Get a Clue @ Your Library” summer reading program is sponsored by the Friends of the Daphne Public Library.
