Juvenile arrested in Robertsdale vandalism case

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – One juvenile has been arrested in connection with a rash of vandalism that has occurred over the last few weeks in the city.

Robertsdale Police Chief Brad Kendrick said graffiti was discovered July 17 at the Kid’s Park and on a drink machine at the baseball field concession stand at Garrett Park. Graffiti was also discovered on private property off the walking trail that runs north of Silverhill Avenue.

“The individual has claimed responsibility for all of the graffiti, but we believe that there could be as many as five juveniles involved,” Kendrick said. More arrests could be pending.

The graffiti at Garrett Park, which is on property owned by the city, has already been cleaned up, Kendrick said. Investigators have been in contact with the owners of the private property and that should be covered up by the end of the week.

“The sooner we can get it cleaned up the better,” he said. “In our experience, if you can get it covered up, then the problem goes away. The longer you leave it there; it becomes a temptation for others to add to it.”

Kendrick said the graffiti is mostly comprised of symbols made to look like gang signs, along with some other obscene words and graphics. Graffiti discovered at the park also included a name, he said.

“I’d really rather not publicize the name to give them any recognition,” Kendrick said. “Let’s just say whoever did this does not appear to be affiliated with any known major gangs.”

Anyone with information on this case or to report additional areas of graffiti in the city should call the Robertsdale Police Department at 251-947-2222.
