Jubilee City gets ready for Daphne Community Day

DAPHNE — The Jubilee City is planning its 1st Annual Flounder Parade, a part of the inaugural Daphne Community Day, to be held May 19 at the Daphne Civic Center Complex.

City leaders and volunteers planned the event to unite Daphne and surrounding areas, according to Sandra Morse, the Daphne Civic Center director.

“The city of Daphne has a push on community and we want to focus on that,” Morse said. “It’s good to know your neighbors and it’s good to have a day out with your neighbors.”

Daphne Community Day — which will include a parade, a crawfish boil, live entertainment, games, story-telling, face-painting and other activities — is open to residents of all areas, Morse said.

“We want to invite any other cities that want to come in. They’re part of the larger community and we welcome everybody in,”she said.

A committee of individuals is working “feverishly” to prepare for the event, she added.

Currently, “We’re taking registration for vendor booths and we’re signing people up for the parade,” Morse said.

Businesses and non-profit organizations that want a booth must reserve one for $100. Fees to rent electrical outlets or water supply — both $25 each — may apply.

Kathy Ebbitt, parade organizer, said that local Cub Scouts, baseball teams, dancers, businesses and Mardi Gras organizations have registered to appear in the Flounder Parade, but more participants are wanted.

“They can come as a group — a business, team — or they can come as a family. We don’t want anybody left out that might want to partake,” Ebbitt said, adding that participants may dress in costumes representing sea creatures.
