MOBILE, Ala. — The Dolphins exploded for 28 first half points and held on to beat 5A Region 1 foe Williamson 35-28 at Ladd Peebles Stadium Friday night.
The Dolphins used a quick option attach that put the Lions on their heels all evening long. After a strong push from the Lions in the second half, the Dolphins stood their ground and earned the crucial win.
“I am proud of our kids they fought to the end. I knew it was going to be a four quarter game,” Dolphin head coach Ben Blackmon said. “You have to play four quarters, not two. We came out in the second half and turned it over and it gave them life. You can’t do that, they are explosive.”
The success of the Dolphins began and ended from the quarterback position: Nathan Harris rushed for a team-high 130 yards and led the Dolphins all night. Harris led the Dolphins to touchdowns on their first four possessions giving the Dolphins the dominating start they were searching for.
In the first half alone, Harris was at least part of plays that went 49 and 56 yards, both of which were touchdowns.
Harris threw for just under 190 yards on just 12 attempts. Senior wide out Corey Kelley was the main beneficiary of Harris’ big night with two receptions that tallied about 100 yards and a 56-yard touchdown in the first half.
The second half was a complete change of momentum when the Lions came out and forced a fumble from the Dolphins after a good drive led them to the Lions 35 yard line.
The Lions scored on their first two drives and brought the deficit to just eight points.
With the lead at sevenpoints for the Dolphins Harris scored on a quarterback keeper from 11 yards out.
With the win the Dolphins are in a good position to make the postseason. Even though winning next week is essential for the Dolphins, coach Blackmon said you can’t think of it that way.
“We can’t worry about winning or losing. We need to worry about performing and executing and doing the little things that either gets you beat or don’t get you beat,” Blackmon said. “Don’t worry about winning or losing just do the little things right, and that’s what we have to go back and work on.”
The Dolphins’ next stop on their road to a potential post season berth will be Friday when they host B.C. Rain at 7 p.m.
