Gulf Shores alum Silvers joining Foley’s staff as offensive analyst

After starring for the Dolphins during his high school days, Gulf Shores alum Brandon Silvers is returning to get involved in Baldwin County’s football scene, this time from the sidelines.

Foley High School announced Wednesday that Silvers will be joining its coaching staff as an offensive analyst following his most recent United Football League season in the spring.

“For me, this is about just being around football and enjoying it again, which is what I wanted to do,” Silvers said. “It’s been a good week-and-a-half, and I’m really excited to get the season going.”

Troy’s former star signal-caller was first contacted by new Lions head coach Bryan Moore back in February. Silvers initially told Moore that he wanted to get through the upcoming UFL campaign with the St. Louis Battlehawks before resuming conversations over the summer.

After the Battlehawks’ season concluded, Silvers returned to Baldwin County for a period of time as he was pondering his next steps.

It just so happened that Silvers’ aunt, Metta Christensen, is the first female Athletic Director in Foley’s history, and thus the early connection was established. And on top of that, Silvers’ uncle, Carey Christensen, also played quarterback at Foley and Troy.

“I went to workouts a couple weeks ago really just to watch with my aunt,” Silvers said. “I met some coaches, and I just told myself that this is what I wanted to do.”

Silvers added that while his formal role is still being finalized, he is primarily working with running backs while also providing some insight in the quarterback room.

“I’m just around talking ball in the building and helping out wherever I can,” Silvers said. “And that’s fine with me.”

Of course, having a former college and professional player on the staff is a boon, but the Lions’ players are still piecing together Silvers’ background.

“A couple of them have started to figure it out and are asking me questions from their digging,” Silvers said.

Foley quarterback Judah Spencer was one of the few who knew Silvers from having thrown with him at regional sessions. But as more players have discovered Silvers’ highlight tapes, the questions have come rolling in.

“The kids will ask me about all kinds of stuff during practice, and I’m like ‘Hey, do your drills and you can ask me afterwards,” Silvers said with a laugh. “I just want to be another guy who’s grown up here and can provide any input I can give them with football or anything really.”

Silvers first started for Gulf Shores as a junior and threw for 2,468 yards and 26 touchdowns that season, and his senior campaign saw him throw for 1,400 yards, 410 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns.

The former Dolphin began playing for Troy in 2014, when he set the NCAA record for the highest completion percentage by a freshman. He guided the Trojans to a 10-3 record and a bowl victory in 2016, earning First-Team All-Sun Belt honors, before leading the program to a Sun Belt co-conference championship and another bowl win in 2017.

In his four years at Troy, Silvers threw for 10,677 yards, 71 touchdowns on 64.4% completion, and he ran for 415 yards and 16 touchdowns as well. He is currently second all-time for passing yards and touchdowns at the school.

Silvers then bounced around at the professional level, spending time with the AAF’s Memphis Express and NFL’s New York Jets in 2019. He joined the XFL’s Seattle Dragons in 2020 before playing for the Houston Roughnecks in 2023, and Silvers spent the past three seasons with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the UFL.

All in all, Silvers is set to provide an invaluable perspective to Foley’s athletes, and Coach Moore hopes that it can help bring the program to new heights during his first year at the helm.

“I’m just very grateful for him [Moore] allowing me to be part of his coaching staff,” Silvers said.
