In the Gulf Coast Media Game of the Week, a Round 3 4A showdown pairs contrasting styles and rising ambitions as a high-powered St. Michael offense meets a relentless Bullock County ground attack in a battle to keep a championship run alive.
This will be the first-ever matchup between the Cardinals and Hornets. St. Michael comes in riding a historic 12-0 season and is just one win shy of breaking the single-season program win record set last season. Bullock County is also looking to make history of its own by tying the program's single-season win record and reaching 10 victories for the first time since 1956.
The winner of this matchup will advance to the semifinals. The Cardinals fell short against defending Class 4A champion Jackson in their lone semifinal appearance last season, while the Hornets are making their first third-round appearance in school history with a chance to reach their first semifinal.
St. Michael continues to be shouldered by an elite offense led by the No. 1-ranked player in the state, quarterback Gunner Rivers. The junior has thrown for 2,813 yards, 44 touchdowns and just five interceptions this year. His top targets are the dangerous tandem of Tucker Tomlinson and Brody Jones, who have combined for 1,732 yards and 27 scores, while the dynamic Noah Moss leads the rushing attack with 1,955 yards and 27 touchdowns.
The Cardinal defense has only improved as the season has progressed, led by senior Nick Russo and juniors Cam Kerbal and Abraham Rogers. The trio has combined for 27 tackles for loss and five sacks this season, while Russo leads the team with 72 tackles. Jones, a two-way player, and Kamarjay Lavoie anchor the secondary with a combined 11 interceptions and seven pass deflections.
Bullock County will bring a much different approach to the line of scrimmage on offense. The Hornets have rushed for 3,373 yards this season, led by junior quarterback Tyekelis Wallace with 1,600 yards and 20 touchdowns. Senior running back Caiden Ivey adds another 757 yards and six scores, while sophomore Jadorion Mack has rushed for 556 yards and six touchdowns.
The Hornets have a handful of two-way stars, with Mack and Wallace leading the way on the other side of the ball as well. Wallace has a team-high four interceptions for the Bullock County secondary, and Mack leads the team with 15.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks. Junior defensive back Jaquez Pearson leads the team in tackles, and outside linebacker Devin Davis comes in with another 11.5 tackles for loss alongside Mack in the trenches.
Kickoff for the Round 3 matchup is set for Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic High School.
