Posted

In a Class 7A Round 2 playoff clash tabbed as the Gulf Coast Media Game of the Week, Daphne looks to snap a two-decade drought against Auburn when the Trojans host the Tigers on Friday night at Jubilee Stadium.

The Trojans and the Tigers have matched up six times, and Auburn holds a 4-2 lead in the series. Daphne has not won a game in the series since 2003 in a first-round playoff matchup. The past four games have been playoff meetings between the two, making this one five in a row. Auburn won 13-7 in the last matchup in 2020 in the second round of the playoffs.

Daphne is coming off a 43-14 first-round win over Sparkman all the way up in North Alabama. Auburn took down Vestavia Hills 52-41 in the first round. The winner of this matchup will advance to the Class 7A semifinals.

The Trojans are led by junior quarterback Christian Segar on offense. Segar has thrown for 2,671 yards, 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Sophomore wideout LaBrayln Williams became the team’s leading receiver at 716 yards and nine touchdowns this season after the first-round game against Sparkman, when he had eight grabs for 108 yards and five total touchdowns. Seniors CJ Gardner and Jaecyn “Scoot” Myles have combined for another 1,257 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Daphne’s defense is led by seniors EJ Williams, a Louisiana-Lafayette commit, and Malique Franklin. Williams leads the team with 95 tackles and has added two interceptions, while Franklin leads the team in tackles for loss (18) and sacks (nine). Young stars sophomore Jaysean Willis and eighth grader Trey Kyles complete an elite defensive front with a combined 28 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

Auburn is also led by its junior quarterback, Carson Myers, who has thrown for 2,216 yards and leads the team in rushing as well with 516 yards and 23 total touchdowns. His top targets are the senior duo of Antonio Welch (774 yards) and Joshua Askew (699 yards), who have combined for 16 of his 18 passing touchdowns.

Defensively, the Tigers are led by seniors Greg Williams and Aiden Parker. Williams leads the team in tackles for loss with 12 and interceptions with three, while Parker leads the team in tackles (97) and adds another 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. Junior Elijah Scott leads the team in sacks with five.

Kickoff for the second-round matchup is set for Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at Jubilee Stadium in Daphne.
