ORANGE BEACH – The 4th annual Island Schools Special Olympics will take place on April 29 at the new Mako Stadium and Athletic Complex at Orange Beach Middle & High School.

This highly anticipated event brings together athletes, families, educators and volunteers from across the island for a meaningful celebration of inclusion and the joy of competition.

The Island Schools Special Olympics provides student-athletes with disabilities from both Gulf Shores City Schools and Orange Beach City Schools to have the opportunity to shine as they compete in a variety of track and field events. Each event is thoughtfully designed to highlight individual strengths, build confidence and celebrate personal achievements.

Over the years, this event has grown into a cherished island tradition, with the two school districts alternating hosting duties. This unique approach allows athletes to experience new environments while strengthening the bond between the two communities.

"This event truly represents the heart of our Island Schools communities," said Kylie Burleson, Director of Special Services for Orange Beach City Schools. "It's a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion and the belief that every student deserves the opportunity to participate, succeed, and be celebrated. We are proud to partner with Gulf Shores City Schools to create such a meaningful and lasting experience for our students."

The event will begin with an opening ceremony featuring the annual Torch Run, which includes emergency responders from both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Throughout the day, spectators can look forward to a full lineup of track and field competitions, inspiring moments of sportsmanship, and unforgettable displays of perseverance and heart.

The event will conclude with a celebratory awards ceremony, where every athlete will be recognized and honored for their hard work and accomplishments with a custom medal donated by 16 Creative. Athletes will also enjoy lunch following the competition, generously provided by Vinny's Pizzeria, with beverages donated by Buffalo Rock.

The entire community is invited to attend and be part of this uplifting experience. Gates will open at 8:45 a.m., with the closing medal ceremony scheduled for noon. Admission is free and guests are encouraged to bring family and friends to cheer on these incredible athletes. The support of the island community helps create an electric atmosphere and reminds each participant just how valued and celebrated they truly are.
