FOLEY, Ala. — Starting this fall, it will cost a little more to rent a hotel room in Foley.
During its regular meeting Monday, the Foley City Council voted to increase its lodging and rental tax to 7 percent for lodging inside the city limits and 3.5 percent inside police jurisdiction but outside city limits. Those amounts are currently at 4 and 2 percent, respectively.
As previously reported, the council first voted on the increase, which is an ordinance change, during its last meeting two weeks ago. At that time, City Administrator Mike Thompson City Administrator Mike Thompson explained that Foley’s cumulative lodging tax totals 8 percent, with the remaining amounts being divided between the state and county.
Thompson pointed out that the increase would still be less than neighboring Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, both of which are cumulatively at 11 percent. In addition, the city administrator said the revenue from the increased tax could be used to fund the city’s multi-use sports complex on County Road 20.
With Monday’s reading, the action is complete. Then once the state is notified, the new rate will take effect Oct. 1.
