A Foley man is being held without bond in the Baldwin County Corrections Center following his involvement in a head-on crash in Robertsdale Sunday morning that took the life of a Georgia doctor and his 12-year-old son.
Juan Manuel Landaverde, 25, of Keller Road is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of first-degree assault and DUI in the deaths of Dr. Allen Mays, 44, and his son, Madison, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Also in the car with the Athens, Ga., doctor were his wife, Rachel, 43, and daughter, Tabby, 10. The two females were transported to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released.
According to Sgt. Rex Bishop of the Robertsdale Police Department, the Mays family was northbound on Ala. Highway 59 at approximately 9:07 a.m. near the intersection of Baldwin County Road 48. A 1998 Ford Van, driven by Landaverde, was southbound on 59 and crossed over into the northbound lanes of the highway and struck the Mays' 1999 Landrover head-on. Landaverde was the only occupant of the van, Bishop said.
The Mays family was returning to Georgia when the head-on crash occurred. They had been vacationing on the Alabama coast with friends.
Bishop said Landaverde was "showing symptoms of injuries" following the crash. He was transported to the University of South Alabama Medical Center by Southflight helicopter where he was treated and then arrested by Robertsdale police.
Besides RPD, the Robertsdale Fire Department, Alabama State Troopers, Summerdale Police Department and Baldwin County Coroner's Office responded to the accident site in front of Overcoming Faith Ministries, a church located on the east side of Highway 59.
