Final AHSAA soccer polls set stage for playoff-bound Baldwin County programs

Posted

The postseason picture is officially set across Baldwin County, and the final AHSAA coaches' polls offer a last snapshot of where local soccer programs stand heading into the playoffs.

Several teams enter the bracket with area titles in hand while others carry late-season momentum, setting up what could be a competitive run for multiple county squads deep into May.

BOYS RANKINGS

Foley landed at No. 10 in the final 7A poll, slipping two spots despite closing the regular season with a win over Spanish Fort in the Baldwin County Cup. The Lions followed that with a loss to Fairhope in the cup final and ultimately finished third in 7A Area 2 behind Fairhope and Daphne.

In 6A, Gulf Shores checked in at No. 8 after dropping one spot in a week where the Dolphins did not take the field. Gulf Shores enters the playoffs as the Area 2 runner-up to Spanish Fort.

Spanish Fort held steady at No. 9 in the 6A rankings. The Toros fell to Foley in the Baldwin County Cup semifinals to close the regular season but still claimed the 6A Area 2 title and finished as a top-15 team in Alabama, according to MaxPreps.

St. Michael moved up one spot to No. 5 in the 5A poll after a 4-4 draw with St. Luke's to end the regular season. The Cardinals leaned heavily on a high-powered frontline of Jake Lazzari and Raphael Duchesne combining for 60 goals — 30 each — while securing the 5A Area 1 championship.

Fairhope remained unranked in 7A but continued to build a strong resume to end the season. The Pirates knocked off Foley to win the Baldwin County Cup and closed the year on a seven-game winning streak. Fairhope also claimed the 7A Area 2 title over both Foley and Daphne, despite never breaking into the coaches poll.

Here is a quick look at the boys 1st round playoff matchups released thus far:

  • 6A: Gulf Shores at St. Paul's (April 24); Spanish Fort vs. Saraland (April 23)
  • 5A: St. Michael vs. Citronelle (April 23); Bayside at Faith Academy (April 24)
  • 7A and 4A brackets were not finalized at the time of release

GIRLS RANKINGS

Spanish Fort led the way on the girls side, coming in at No. 5 in the 6A poll after slipping one spot in a week without a match. The Lady Toros enter the postseason as 6A Area 2 champions and a top-15 team in the state just like the boys squad, per MaxPreps.

St. Michael held firm at No. 8 in 5A after a split week that included a 3-1 win over ranked Bayshore and a 4-0 loss to ranked St. Luke's. The Cardinals finished as the Area 1 runner-up behind Elberta as well.

In 4A, Orange Beach dropped to No. 2 — marking the first time all season the Makos have not held the top spot. Despite not playing last week, Orange Beach remains one of the top teams in the state and enters the playoffs with a proven record of 16-3-1.

Bayshore Christian stayed at No. 8 in the 1-3A poll following a loss to St. Michael and a draw with Bayside. The Eagles have not recorded a win since March 24 but remain in the rankings heading into the postseason.

Fairhope and Elberta once again highlight the notable unranked teams in the county. The Lady Pirates finished the year on a six-game winning streak, going undefeated in area play to claim the 7A Area 2 title.

The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, started 16-0 before a late-season stumble. They later rebounded with a 2-1 win over Saraland to close the regular season and secure the 5A Area 1 championship.

And here is a quick look at the girls 1st round playoff matchups released thus far:

  • 7A: Fairhope vs. Baker; Daphne at McGill-Toolen (April 28)
  • 6A: Spanish Fort vs. Saraland (April 23)
  • 5A: St. Michael at Faith Academy; Elberta vs. Citronelle (April 24)
  • 1-3A: Bayshore at Houston Academy (April 28)
  • 4A: Bracket not finalized
