Elberta man rams police car

ELBERTA, Ala. — An Elberta man is in custody and an Elberta Police car is out of commission following a high-speed chase Saturday night.

According to Elberta Police Chief Stan DeVane, an emergency call came in at approximately 10:45 p.m. Saturday on County Road 95.

“It was a domestic-violence call in progress,” he said.

The call indicated that 30-year-old Joshua Allen Sutton had assaulted one of his family members and threatened to kill himself, DeVane said, adding that Sutton then allegedly stole the family’s RV.

“Officer Brandon Booker spotted the vehicle at (U.S. Highway) 98 and (County Road) 95 and fled toward Pensacola,” the chief said.

DeVane added while following Sutton east on U.S. Highway 98, Booker and the reserve officer riding with him saw Sutton driving on both sides of the road and then throwing items out of the vehicle.

As Sutton’s speed topped 95 mph, Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputies joined in the chase, and Sutton crossed Lillian Bridge into Florida. He then allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and rammed the Elberta Police patrol car.

“Then he tried to make a u-turn and got stuck in a ditch,” DeVane said, adding that Sutton was subsequently apprehended.

As for both Elberta officers in the car that was hit, DeVane said they are fine.

“Nobody was hurt,” he said.

However, the side of the car is badly damaged and the side mirror is damaged, along with the police strobe light attached to it.

“I think it’s going to be totaled,” DeVane said, explaining that the total cost of damage to the $7,000 crown Victoria is still being tallied.

Sutton is being held at the Escambia County, Fla., jail on a third-degree aggravated assault charge, a felony in Florida. Upon transportation back to Baldwin County, he also faces the misdemeanor charges of attempting to elude, reckless endangerment and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

DeVane said this is not Sutton’s first run-in with Elberta Police.

“This is the third arrest since I’ve been chief,” he said, “and every time’s involved a violent incident.”
