The second day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s indoor track state championship meet saw athletes from Elberta and Gulf Shores become their program’s first individual champions in the Class 4A/5A meet and two more Foley Lions earn individual titles with school-record marks in the Class 7A championship.

Elberta’s Cameron Ossler won the 60-meter hurdles, with a school-record time of 8.73 seconds, as well as the high jump competition with a 6’ clearance to be the first Warrior to claim a state title on the indoor track circuit. Ossler also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team of Rosson Duplesis, David Gee and Charlie Woerner which set a school record at 3:34.69 with their third-place finish.

Also in the field events, Gulf Shores’ Lily Zlab won the high jump and Lydia Reno took gold from the shot put to serve as the first Dolphins to win indoor track state championships. Zlab cleared 5’ 4” in the high jump pit and Reno registered a 35’ 11.75” shot put to not only earn gold medals but also increase program records according to marks on athletic.net.

Lions roar with school records, state champs

A pair of Foley Lions also earned individual state titles in the Class 7A championship with school bests of their own. Destiny Roper won gold in the 60-meter dash after she crossed the finish line in 7.67 seconds and Zi’morah Foster recorded the top long jump of the day at 17’ 9.5”. Aliyah Williams (16’ 6.25” for 7th place) joined Foster in the long jump competition and also moved into second place in program history.

Roper grabbed herself another school record with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.23 seconds. In the boys’ running events, cross-country all-stater Nick Hamby grabbed top-10 finishes in the 1600-meter run (4:18.93 for 6th) and 3200-meter run (9:36.20 for 5th) to also set school records in both races.

Other podium finishes from Foley athletes included the 4x200-meter relay team of Foster, Williams, Hope Collins and Roper with a time of 1:45.62 for third place, Emily Wolf in the shot put with a distance of 36’ 7.25” for third and Perry Thompson with a 7.03-second 60-meter dash also for bronze.

For Thompson, an Alabama football commit, his time marked the second-best in program history, as did the 4x200-meter relay team behind its own record.

School-record relay times

Also on the Class 7A stage, Fairhope’s 4x800-meter relay team of Ella McDowell, Delaney Hart, Lynley Grace Anderson and Reagan Hadley recorded a time of 10:22.98 to finish ninth and mark a school record.

Both 4x400-meter relay teams from Gulf Shores also set school records at 4:32.41 on the girls’ side and 3:47.51 for the boys’ team. Beck Montiel became the Dolphins’ new fastest 800-meter runner with a time of 2:04.63 for 15th.

Montiel finished just behind Elberta’s David Gee, whose time of 2:04.46 for 14th place set a school record in the same race. Rosson Duplesis set the 400-meter standard for the Warriors at 51.88 which also earned him fifth place at state.

In the field events, Elberta’s pole vault and long jump records now belong to Olivia Akins (8’) and Jenna Pence (15’ 1”), respectively. Akins’ clearance landed her 10th in the event and Pence recorded a ninth-place finish against the best in the state.
