Thompson talks Tide: Foley receiver among Lions’ offensive onslaught at 7-on-7 Showdown

Perry Thompson was part of the aerial attack that helped the Foley Lions win all three games the first day of competition at their host 7-on-7 Showdown last week.

Although he has two more years in the Lions’ blue and gold, Thompson will swap to crimson and look to factor into the University of Alabama passing game after he announced his commitment June 24, 11 days after he received his seventh Division I offer.

“That’s kind of where the clock is for those guys, the clock’s gotten earlier so you’ll probably see a lot more guys earlier in their careers committing to power five conferences,” Foley Head Coach Deric Scott said after June 29’s opening day of competition.

The 6-foot-3, 206-pound rising junior said everything lined up and he was happy to announce the bond.

“The staff, coaches; everything was nice,” Thompson said of what sold him. “(Head Coach Nick Saban) told me I have great speed for my size, liked everything about me.”

In recently updated top-20 rankings for Alabama’s Class of 2024 players, recruiting service Rivals ranked Thompson as the No. 16 overall prospect. He also checked in as the No. 46 wide receiver prospect in the nation.

Those rankings were on display at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex last week where Thompson provided a deep threat to complement receivers such as Harrison Knight and Makai Mitchell, among others, for quarterback Reese Tynes to choose from.

“We’re excited for Perry, it’s just something we felt like he’s been in line for,” Scott said. “Some things are pretty evident early on, and he was one of those guys you could identify talent in early, but he is just one aspect to what we feel like we have available at Foley High School this year.”

Following the 7-on-7 Showdown, the Lions entered the final phase of their summer offseason before the season officially gets underway.

“Felt like I did pretty good today but the team played great,” Thompson said. “(This is going to lead us into the last of) summer and we’re going to get ready.”
