MOBILE, Ala. — Spanish Fort’s Elaine Wood shot a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to win the girls Dixie Section PGA Junior Championship at Azalea City Golf Club in Mobile last week.
Wood and the boys division tournament winner Wesley Hunter are now qualified to play for the 38th Junior PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club-Washington, D.C. The course is on the Potomac River in Potomac Falls, Va.
Wood was one stroke off the lead after the first round on Wednesday. But battled back from a 3-over-par 75 in round one to win the title by 8 strokes (144-152) over 16-18 age-division runner up Antonia Poate of Niceville, Fla. The tournament’s 13-15-year-old girls' champion was Kaitlyn Papp of Lillian who had the best first round with a 70 and closed with a 146 2-over-par for the second best overall girls’ score.
Wood signed to play collegiate golf for the University of Montevallo last November and will begin her freshman year with the Falcons this fall. A former Baldwin County champion and top-five state high school player. Wood also excelled in basketball with three varsity letters and over 1,000 points recorded for the Lady Toros.
A St. Luke's graduate, Hunter finished the boys' second round at 2-under-par 142 with a hot 7-under-par 65 for the tournament crown. He edged McGill-Toolen Catholic grad Steven Setterstrom Jr. by one stroke and first-round leader Eric Brennan by two.
Wood and Hunter will each compete in a field of 41 co-PGA Junior section champions.
The Junior PGA Championship is presented by Under Armour and Hotel Fitness.
Other local division leaders at the tournament were reigning Baldwin County high school champion and incoming freshman at Fairhope High Virginia Green of Point Clear and —in the same age division— John Racciatti Jr. of Fairhope and Charles Wood Jr. (Elaine Wood’s brother) of Spanish Fort also did well in the boys tournament.
