Daphne hosts world premiere of student-penned show

DAPHNE — Baldwin County audiences were the first in the world to witness "The Circus of Spectacles."

The world-premiere of the show was produced by the Pelican Players of Baldwin County Virtual Secondary School. It was written and directed by senior Ivey Simpson.

The story follows high school student Damian, a scholar who has worked his entire life toward law school. Graduation requirements force him to take an extracurricular creative writing class. It is here where he learns the most important lessons of his high school days as he finds that his devotion to perfection may hurt more than it helps.

Simpson said she based the character on her own experiences.

"I am very hard on myself and I would say during my sophomore year I was very, very burnt out. I drew inspiration from that and how that negativity can not only affect you but other people in your life as well," she said.

The most difficult part of writing and directing her own show, she said, was tending to the various details.

"Sometimes a certain thing will come up you need to figure out about sound design or scene changes. There are so many things you have to consider," she said.

Simpson recently won second place in the Trumbauer High School Theatre Festival for her work in makeup design. She plans on doubling in theater and English next year in college with a focus on play writing and tech.

"I love writing something and taking this image in my mind and putting it on stage," she said.
