DAPHNE, Alabama — Daphne High’s 7-on-7 tournament football program is set to snap into action Friday when the inaugural Jubilee City Championship begins pool play at Al Trione Park on Whispering Pines Road.

The first of four games Friday will begin at 5 p.m., and each team will play three games on Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Bayside Admirals and RHS Golden Bears are set to meet in pool play Saturday at 9 a.m. The seeded tournament will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery hopes the event will grow into a major annual showcase.

“We are really trying to make this a first class event. We are getting this tournament off the ground and (want) to turn it into something very special for Daphne and Baldwin County. And we are hoping to build this up to an even bigger event.”

JUBILEE CITY 7-ON-7 COMPETING TEAMS: Bayside Academy and Robertsdale are among the local Baldwin teams participating. Blount, Mobile Christian and Williamson make up the Mobile County teams while some of the 16 teams outside the area committed to play include Auburn, Belle Chase and Mandeville of Louisiana, Charles Henderson of Troy, Carver and Lanier of Montgomery, Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Catholic of Florida and Prattville.

BAYSIDE ACADEMY, ROBERTSDALE IN POOL ‘B’: The 2013 Jubilee City Championship Pool Play Brackets are, Pool A: 1) Blount, 2) Charles Henderson, 3) Carver, 4) Gulf Breeze, Fla., 5) Prattville, 6) Mobile Christian, 7) Belle Chase, La., 8) Auburn-2; Pool B: 1) Auburn, 2) Northview-Dothan, 3) Mandeville, La., 4) Pensacola Catholic, 5) Robertsdale, 6) Sidney Lanier, 7) Williamson, 8) Bayside.

TOURNAMENT’S IMPACT ON LOCAL ECONOMY: Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery added that local businesses and residents benefit from the economic impact from such an event with so many teams taking part, many including families staying in local hotel rooms and patronizing restaurants and stores.

“We have several teams staying (overnight) in hotels. We are proud we can help give back to our city and our local merchants through an event like this one. They do plenty for Daphne High School.”
