Daphne Fire Department busy over Memorial Day weekend

DAPHNE — The Memorial Day weekend was no holiday for Daphne firefighters.

Part of Saturday was spent battling a house fire, while a fire in the woods was put down on Monday, said interim fire Chief Kenny Hanak.

Both fires occurred in Lake Forest, he said.

Saturday’s call came at about 5 p.m. and involved a 2.5-story home at 102 Kentwood Drive, Hanak said.

He said the house was already engulfed by flames by the time his men arrived on scene.

“There was fire coming out of every window; evidently it had been burning quite a while before we got there,” Hanak said.

Thirteen city firefighters and eight from Spanish Fort responded to the call.

They had the structure fire under control in about an hour, he said.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, Hanak said.

He estimated damages to the house at roughly $250,000.

An investigation into the fire’s origin is still ongoing, Hanak said.

City firefighters also put out a woods fire early Monday morning in Lake Forest, he said.

“We think that it was probably started by kids who had been trying to start a campfire in the woods,” Hanak said.

This fire was discovered while firefighters were responding to a medical call, he said.

“They noticed smoke in Lake Forest and hunted until they found the cause of it,” he said.

Hanak said he believes this blaze, which was discovered at 5:50 a.m., had probably been burning all night.

It was located off Forestwood Drive and was in an undeveloped part of the community.

He said it was a few hundred yards from any homes.

Seven Daphne firefighters responded to this call.

He’s hoping this won’t be a sign of things to come.

“There was a summer, about three years ago, when we had 40 woods fires in just that one season,” Hanak said.

Both Baldwin and Mobile counties are under a state ban on outdoor burning, he said.
