Daphne City Councilman Steve Olen, who represents District 2, recently announced his re-election bid.
Olen is currently completing his five-year term that includes one year as president. In a statement announcing his re-election bid on June 11, Olen highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including his role in bringing a state-of-the-art animal shelter to Daphne, designed to serve the community for years to come. During his term, he also helped oversee improvements to Bayfront Park, with construction of an over 2,000-seat amphitheater at Bayfront Park set to begin in the near future.
"It has been an honor to serve the people of District 2 and work alongside others who care deeply about the future of Daphne," Olen said. "We have made major progress on public safety, parks and long-term planning, and I want to continue building on that momentum with steady, thoughtful leadership."
Other parks and recreational areas he cited as having seen improvements under his tenure include Centennial Park in downtown Daphne, the Daphne Sports Complex, Lott Park, Joe Louis Patrick Park and Trione Park. He has also been a strong supporter of public safety and the needs of the police and fire departments, helping in opening a new fire station and investing more than $3 million in new fire trucks. The city also developed a new police patrol officer facility and expanded its municipal courtroom in an effort to better serve the community.
In planning and development, Olen pushed for the adoption of stronger land use ordinances for developers and builders and worked to implement impact fees. City council also approved a new 20-year comprehensive plan to help shape the city's long-term vision.
Olen has lived in Olde Towne Daphne since 2010. He is a graduate of Princeton University and the Cumberland School of Law. He is married to Sharon Olen, with whom they have three children, four grandchildren and a fifth grandchild due in October. They attend St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
