Council votes to rezone property

LOXLEY — The Loxley Town Council held a public hearing Monday on a request for a zoning ordinance change by Frank Wallace for his property on Baldwin County 49. Steen requested the property be changed from R-1 (single family residential) to M-1 (light industrial). The town’s planning commission had recommended the change as the property is located at the Loxley Industrial Park area.

There was no input from the public and the council suspended the rules and voted to allow the zoning change.

Michael Presswood addressed the council on the issue of a mobile home on his property on North Pine Street. The town had requested the property be cleaned up and the mobile home removed as it has been deemed a public nuisance.

The structure was abandoned and fell into disrepair before Presswood purchased the property. According to the town’s zoning ordinances, a mobile home in a non-conforming area (not in a mobile home park) must be removed if left vacant for one year.

Presswood questioned why another mobile home was allowed in the neighborhood, but not on his property. Shawn Alvez, the town’s attorney, noted that the property he asked about isn’t inside the city limits and does not fall under the town’s zoning ordinances.

In other business, the council:

— Approved the purchase of a new truck for the utility department from Terry Thompson Chevrolet for $17,721.30.

— Approved the expenditure of $3,950 for mold testing and eradication at the Police Dispatch building.

— Voted to enter into an agreement with Baldwin County County to house Loxley offenders at the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette.

— Awarded the bid for the Highway 59 Main Improvement project to the low bidder, Boyington Pipeline Construction. The bid was $314,250.

— Awarded the Greenwood Cemetery Road Water Main project to the low bidder, Brunson Nichols Construction Co. The bid was $160,326.37.

— Awarded Duke Instrument Service the bid for a telemetry system for the water system. The bid was for $79,480.

— Passed a resolution to enter into a lease purchase agreement with DivLend Equipment Leasing, for the public safety software and system hardware.

Mayor Billy Middleton told the council he had gotten “a lot of really positive comments” about the Independence Day fireworks show at Loxley Memorial Park. The city purchased the fireworks for the celebration, but they couldn’t be used due to bad weather. He commended Katherine Breeden for “all her hard work” on making the town’s 50th Anniversary Celebration a success.
