Council holds brief meeting

SILVERHILL — The Silverhill Town Council met briefly Monday night to discuss business at the Silverhill Town Hall.

The council adopted two ordinances that were approved at its last meeting June 18.

One ordinance dealt with flood damage prevention, while the other rezoned property from B-2 to R-3 for the building of a duplex.

Both ordinances were passed with a unanimous vote with all council members present.

In the only other action taken at Monday’s meeting the council voted to approve a flat rate for business license fees.

Town clerk Bonnie McNeil said most of the town’s business license fees are already the same — $100 — with few variations.

In other business Monday, Benjamin Keenan, a member of the local Scout troop, approached the council regarding his Eagle Scout project.

Keenan said the project would have to contain at least 100 hours of work and members of the Scout troop would be allowed to assist in the project.

Superintendent of Utilities Steve Williams said his department is currently working on landscaping projects at Oscar Johnson Park which Keenan could help with.

Scout master Steve Pumphrey told council members that other Scouts had recently completed projects for the school and the library.

“Benjamin really wanted to do something that would benefit the town,” Pumphrey said. “Anytime you have a project, not just a major project, that you think the Scouts could help with, we’d be glad to.”

Pumphrey said Keenan’s project would have to be a approved by the Scouting Council.

“It has to be a major project,” he said, “not just some little thing that doesn’t require much work.”

The council also heard from Greg Thomas, a volunteer with the Silverhill Fire Department, regarding a planned county-wide chili cookoff fundraiser that would be held during Heritage Day in October.

Thomas said different departments throughout the county would supply chili which would be judged by a panel. The public would also be given the opportunity to judge the contest, he said.

“Chili cookoffs have been very successful in other areas where there are a large number of volunteer departments with just a few paid departments,” he said.

There will also be a fire truck judging contest and the Silverhill Volunteer Fire Department will be selling chili.

“We’re not going to participate in the chili cookoff this first year,” he said. “We will have our own chili cookoff to determine who gets to cook chili for sale.”

Trophies will be provided, including a large trophy that can be passed between the departments, Thomas said. Proceeds from the event will benefit Silverhill School and the ballparks, he said. Any money left over will be used to provide smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for those who cannot afford them.

In other business at Monday’s meeting:

— Discussed cleaning of town hall and other facilities, but decided to take no action pending further information.

— Decided to get pricing on providing a newsletter for residents.

— Heard from Police Chief Alvin Coggins that the city of Foley has agreed to provide temporary use of its jail facilities for prisoners until the town can finalize agreements with the county and the city of Fairhope.

— Received an update on the town’s well project.
