Baldwin County resident and Alabama 1st Congressional District candidate Joshua McKee has teamed with Project Dynamo to deliver supplies and aid in humanitarian operations in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa.
McKee traveled to Jamaica on Oct. 29 alongside members of the Project Dynamo team to assist with distribution efforts and to help establish communication channels. McKee and the team will provide internet access for families through Starlink satellite connectivity to reconnect with loved ones.
Project Dynamo is a veteran-led humanitarian organization that has conducted rescue and relief operations in areas around the world such as Afghanistan, Ukraine, Israel and the Caribbean.
James Judge, who is a member of Project Dynamo and previously ran for Florida's 15th Congressional District, is accompanying McKee to Jamaica. He said the group is bringing around 3,000 pounds worth of supplies ranging from medical supplies to food and water. They also plan to help evacuate American citizens and others stranded.
McKee, an Army Special Forces veteran, said he is "doing something greater than yourself."
"To me, that's helping people, serving people," McKee said. "If you can't do something greater than yourself, you're never going to find happiness. I find happiness in helping people. ... To come down here and to help the people of Jamaica, it is the same thing. It's about serving, and that's what our lives should be about."
Judge said they plan to be in the area until stability has been fully restored and commercial flights resume.
