Have you ever wondered what happens to all the luggage left behind, lost or unclaimed, at airports?

There’s a massive warehouse in Alabama that answers those questions and lets you look into people’s packed lives. This weekend, Unclaimed Baggage, a one-of-a-kind retail store and the country’s only merchant of unclaimed and lost airline baggage and its contents, is offering the chance for the public to explore its treasure trove of goods that airlines have been unable to reunite with their former owners while also supporting the foster care system and children in need of luggage.

To bring awareness to National Foster Care Month, Unclaimed Baggage is hosting a special Love Luggage Celebration Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18. As part of the Reclaimed for Good charity, Love Luggage invites the community to participate in a special painting project to provide much-needed luggage for children in the foster care system.

Too often, children moving out of their homes into a foster home or moving to a different foster home have only a black trash bag in which to pack and transport their clothes, belongings and anything dear to them. At this event, visitors can participate in the Painting Station from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to express their creativity on suitcases. The painted suitcases will be donated to regional partners and agencies to provide a solid and compassionate way for children to move their belongings.

The Love Luggage Celebration will also include:

  • A silent auction that will be held throughout the event featuring a suitcase filled with various items. All proceeds will be donated to the local Jackson County Foster Closet;
  • Kona Ice food truck treats stationed in the main parking lot, with 20% of the proceeds directly benefitting the Love Luggage initiative; and
  • A 25% discount on all suitcases and luggage during the Love Luggage Celebration Weekend.

The Unclaimed Baggage store has made national news for its ever-changing array of unique items from around the world, all sold at an incredible value. As part of its commitment to service and generosity, the company created the Reclaimed for Good foundation, which has given millions of dollars’ worth of product and profit to meet needs around the globe.
