GULF SHORES - Jo Bonner has moved up his resignation day from Congress 13 days to Aug. 2. The move will give the governor more time to get a special election organized and conducted so the district is represented in January when Congress reconvenes.

“Earlier today, I notified House Speaker John Boehner of my intent to leave Congress on Aug 2,” Bonner, R-Mobile, said. “It was always my intent for this seat to be vacant as little time as possible; therefore, I am moving up my original resignation date to ensure that a new representative can be elected and seated in time for the Second Session of the 113th Congress in January 2014.

“I'm grateful to Gov. (Robert) Bentley for his assistance with this, and I will be forever indebted to the people of South Alabama for the privilege of representing them in the U.S. Congress.”

A list of at least nine candidates has expressed interest in the seat including former gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne from Mobile and businessman Dean Young from Orange Beach.

Additionally, he Baldwin County Young Republicans have partnered with Yellowhammer Politics to bring the constituents of Alabama’s First Congressional District an up and close look at each of the nine candidates running for the United States House of Representatives.

President of Yellowhammer Politics, Cliff Sims, will be moderating the forum that is to follow typical candidate debate structure.

The debate will be at McCollough Institute at Craft Farms, Gulf Shores, Alabama on Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. This event will provide an in depth look into the campaigns and the candidates themselves a part of a highly contested seat being vacated by Bonner.
