BAY MINETTE, Ala. – There will be a familiar face on the sidelines at the Baldwin County High School football game Friday night.
Former coach Lyle Underwood will be honored with the dedication of the stadium named in his honor.
Last year, the Baldwin County Board of Education voted to name the facility the Lyle B. Underwood Stadium.
A special reception will kick-off the festivities, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Bay Minette Elementary School cafeteria. At 6:15 p.m., former players for Coach Underwood’s teams are invited to meet at the “old bathhouse” to prepare to “Charge the Field” to open the game.
Underwood and the players will run through the banner just prior to the start of the 7 p.m. match-up against the Theodore Bobcats.
Underwood was coach at BCHS from 1966 to 1980 and boasted a record of 102-38-3 during his tenure here, including seven county championships. His teams played in seven state play-off games and was ranked in the Top 10 in the state eight out of 14 years.
More than 40 of his players signed football scholarships and he coached 90 All-County players, 17 All-State Players and four All-American players.
After completing his tenure at BCHS, Underwood went on to become principal at Fairhope Middle School until he retired in 1991.
In addition to being selected to the Baldwin County High School Hall of Fame, he is also a member of the Hall of Fame for Foley High, East Mississippi Community College, Baldwin County Coaches and the Alabama High School Sports.
Tickets are available at the school office or at the gate. The cost of admission is $6.
