The Bayside Admirals dominated all three phases in a 50-0 win over the Tuscaloosa Knights — a feat made sweeter by clinching a home playoff spot for most of the postseason.
Bayside finished 9-1 with a region championship — its first since 2011 and best regular-season record in 13 years.
The game was blown open early when a low snap on a punt backed the Knights’ defense up to their own 7-yard line. Admirals quarterback Davis Barnett connected with Bo Miller to score the first points of the game.
Tuscaloosa’s next drive ended with another punt blunder when Noah Cain returned it for a touchdown. It was called back, luckily for the Knights, but that didn’t save them from special teams woes. Once it was Bayside’s turn to punt, the ball touched the toes of a Tuscaloosa receiver and was recovered by Sam Cunningham for the Admirals on the 39-yard line.
Cain, hungry for the touchdown that almost was, caught a 28-yard pass immediately followed by an 11-yard score. Both touchdowns for Bayside were accompanied by two-point conversions, and the score was 16-0 with 2:25 left in the first quarter.
The Knights were eager to put the game back in striking distance, but senior defensive lineman Will Allen was more eager and stalled them with a sack.
Cain, aided by an offensive line that parted Tuscaloosa like the Red Sea, continued to feast with a 10-yard touchdown run shortly after getting the ball back. The Knights were determined to get their act together on the next drive, but Allen was more determined again and stopped them with another sack.
A missed field goal by the Admirals gave Tuscaloosa a chance to seize momentum, but the only one who got seized was Knights quarterback Mark Norris as Allen sacked him once again.
“He is a nightmare to try and block,” Bayside head coach Barrett Trotter said of Allen. “It’s very fitting on Halloween that he went out and handled business.”
Another shanked punt put the Admirals 38 yards away from the end zone, and Barnett later connected with Ladd Powers for a 30-yard touchdown. Miller intercepted a pass to end the half, and a 28-0 lead going into the locker room was the result.
Cain eventually tiptoed down the sideline to score a 15-yard touchdown early in the second half. He followed it up with a 67-yard punt return to put Bayside on the Tuscaloosa 1-yard line.
Running back Wells Smith practically skipped in to bring the score up to 43-0. The Admirals’ sideline started celebrating every big play a backup made as hard as their earlier touchdowns.
The Knights converted a 4th-and-8 to put the ball 18 yards away from their first points, but a snap aimed at the moon sailed over quarterback Bill David Wagner’s head and was recovered by Bayside.
Admirals backup quarterback Cooper Mason connected with wide receiver Hayden Coumanis in the final minute to seal a 50-0 win.
Since an opening loss to undefeated St. Michael, Bayside hasn’t allowed an opponent to finish within one score. The Admirals now prepare for another 3A playoff run starting next week — this time as one of the favorites for the crown.
“I’m excited to put their film on, go out and have a fun playoff game,” Trotter said. “That’s what you work for.”
