The AHSAA state tennis championships will be full of talent from Baldwin County following victories and runner up finishes across multiple classifications in sectional tournaments this past week.
The week was highlighted by 22 sectional champions and 10 county programs with athletes who will be competing at the state meets.
Bayside Academy highlighted the 1A-3A Section 1 field with a dominant performance on both sides. For the girls, Sarah Adams and Anne Patton Gaillard captured sectional championships, while Elizabeth Macpherson, Eleanor Laymon, Laura Mac Sheffield and Avery Fergus each finished as singles runners-up. In doubles, the teams of Macpherson and Laymon, Adams and Gaillard, and Elizabeth Coumanis and Fergus all placed second.
The Bayside boys also claimed multiple titles, with Acker Luedecke, Frank Smith, Greer McIntosh and Taber Nebrig winning sectional championships in singles. Fenn Schlesinger added a runner-up finish. In doubles, Colby Hoffman and Luedecke, along with Schlesinger and Nebrig, were runners-up.
Bayshore Christian saw Henry Rainer and Owen Monroe win the 1A-3A Section 1 doubles title, while Rainer also secured a singles championship. Monroe, Noah Lascari and Jeffery Johnson each finished as singles runners-up as well.
In 4A-5A Section 1, Elberta's Ella Kate Bailey won a singles championship for the girls. The Elberta boys doubles team of Sam Pugh and Aydon Warren finished as runners-up as well.
Daphne's Kyra Lamont earned a runner-up finish in Class 7A Section 1 singles competition — the Trojans only state qualifier.
Fairhope produced a large group of qualifiers in Class 7A. On the girls side, Rowan Harrison, Gioia Calzetta, Erin Foutch, Megan Hornigold and Kenley McLemore all placed second in singles. The doubles teams of Bonnie Bailey and McLemore, and Hornigold and Calzetta, also finished as runners-up. For the boys, Carson Luter, Henry Booth and Hays Townshend were singles runners-up, while Booth and Jay Hawley placed second in doubles.
Foley added several qualifiers in Class 7A. Clara Reiff and Emmarie Avery were doubles runners-up for the girls. On the boys side, Kior Ball, Vincent Ball and Sawyer McGowan each earned runner-up finishes in singles, while the doubles teams of Vincent Ball and Ronin Bryce, and McGowan and Nathan Vecsey, also placed second.
In 4A-5A Section 1, Orange Beach finished as runner-up in both boys and girls competition but still produced multiple champions. Kate Hampton won a girls singles title and teamed with Joni Lynch to claim a doubles championship. Kendall Courtney and Averi Adams also captured a doubles title, while Lynch and Adams each finished as singles runners-up.
For the Lions boys, Sam Davenport and Harrison Arnold won singles championships, and Josue Mendez placed second. Mendez paired with Ryan Corker to win a doubles title as well to round out a strong team performance for the Makos.
Gulf Shores saw just Tereza Mojos qualify, but it came with a win in the Class 6A Section 1 girls singles championship.
Spanish Fort's Lanny Wang claimed the Class 6A Section 1 singles title on the boys side. Teammates Gillen Holley, Owen McGough, Jackson Lober, Caleb Maxwell and JD Hons all finished as singles runners-up. In doubles, the teams of Wang and Holley, Hons and McGough, and Lober and Maxwell each placed second.
St. Michael Catholic swept the 4A-5A Section 1 girls competition. Courtney Vaughn, Anna Catherine Lightcap, Molly McDonald and Emma Ward each won singles championships, while Olivia Green and Anna Berrios were runners-up. Green and Berrios captured a doubles title, and the teams of Ward and McDonald, and Vaughn and Lightcap, finished as runners-up.
All state tournament brackets are set for April 20-24 at the Mobile Tennis Center.
