Week 8 featured some firsts for local football teams as the Baldwin County Tigers cracked the win column for the first time this season and the Bayshore Christian Eagles registered the program’s first-ever region win in its inaugural varsity campaign.
Baldwin County took down Murphy 22-6 thanks in part to first-half touchdowns from senior Ti Mims (2 yards on the ground) and junior LeJames Daniels (15 yards through the air from classmate Hayden Coley).
Sophomore Tay Young registered the final touchdown, a 1-yard rush, before the Tigers capped the scoring with a safety. The Baldwin County defense also provided a goal-line stand in the first half with a forced fumble and recovery.
The win served as the first of the Andrew Davis Era in Bay Minette.
The Tigers moved to 1-6 overall and 1-4 within Class 6A Region 1 with a road trip to face the Blount Leopards (1-5, 1-4) on next week’s docket.
Spanish Fort Toros 31, Gulf Shores Dolphins 15
After they trailed 3-0 at halftime on their home turf, the Spanish Fort Toros rattled off 31 unanswered points to earn a 31-15 win over the Gulf Shores Dolphins. Spanish Fort won its fourth game in a row heading into a bye week.
An 18-yard pass from junior Aaden Shamburger to senior Nehemiah Hixon made it 14-3 late in the third quarter before a 20-yard rushing score from senior EJ King made it 24-3 in the fourth quarter. Senior Sawyer Wilson delivered the final blow with a 31-yard rushing touchdown to make it 31-3 and complement a stout defensive effort that included an interception from senior AJ Riley.
Gulf Shores sophomore quarterback Jud Harris hooked up with junior Nick Hampton on touchdown throws of 80 and 10 yards as part of a 5-catch, 103-yard night for the receiver. Harris completed 11 passes for 141 yards and senior Kolin Wilson led the Dolphins’ ground attack with 94 rushing yards.
The Toros improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in Class 6A Region 1. After the bye week, Spanish Fort has region contests remaining against McGill-Toolen (Oct. 25 at home) and St. Paul’s (Nov. 1 away).
