ROBERTSDALE BOYS
Entering his 19th year leading the Golden Bears, head coach Marshall Davis Jr. is focused on rebuilding a young Robertsdale squad after a 5-24 season. The program returns just one starter, but Davis said his players’ dedication has been strong through the offseason.
“We are up for the challenge even though we are very young,” Davis Jr. said. “These kids have been in the gym every morning practice, when I open the gym up they are there. We are trying to build off that — Me and Coach (Justin) Jones talked about this; keeping the main thing the main thing from the shoulders up. Just getting in their heads and letting them understand life is life. It’s okay to mess up, but you have to move forward from that.”
Davis helped organize a freshman league for Baldwin County schools to aid development and said senior JaDarius White has set the tone for the team’s defensive mindset. With two coaches on staff who have head coaching experience, Davis believes the foundation is in place for steady growth.
ROBERTSDALE GIRLS
Veteran coach Wes Brewer enters his first season with the Golden Bears after a 3-23 campaign last season for the program. Brewer, who previously coached at East Central High School in Mississippi, is emphasizing adaptability and team unity as Robertsdale looks to improve.
“Once you build relationships, you have to be multiple,” Brewer said. “You can have a plan until they tip the ball off. If you’re not multiple and can’t make changes within the game, sometimes it won’t go too good for you.”
Brewer praised senior Martinez and sophomore Peyton Steele for their leadership both on and off the court, calling them two of the most dedicated members of the team.
