The road to a Blue Map trophy is narrowing for Baldwin County baseball and softball programs as postseason play intensifies across the state.
While baseball teams continue their push through the AHSAA state playoffs, softball area tournaments are now underway with county teams fighting to keep their seasons alive in win-or-go-home action.
BASEBALL POSTSEASON
Bayshore Christian saw its season come to an end in the second round of the 2A state playoffs, dropping two games at home to Reeltown.
In 4A, both Bayside Academy and Orange Beach were eliminated in round two. The Makos were swept at home by Bibb County, while the Admirals fell in two games on the road to Opp.
Daphne baseball was also eliminated, falling in the opening round of the 7A playoffs to Auburn.
Fellow area rival Fairhope fell in the opening round as well. The Pirates split their series at home against Central-Phenix City through two game, though the deciding Game 3 would not be played until Monday evening due to rain as Fairhope fell 3-1.
Gulf Shores were the only county team to keep its postseason hopes alive with a hard-fought road series win over Stanhope Elmore in the 6A playoffs. The Dolphins claimed Game 1, suffered a lopsided loss in Game 2, then bounced back to win the decisive third game and advance to the Elite Eight. Gulf Shores will host Spain Park in the 6A Elite Eight this Friday, May 8, in a dobule header.
Tres Moore led the Dolphins at the dish with a 6-for-11 weekend that included nine RBIs, a double and a home run. And it was John Will Nix coming up big in his Game 1 start on the mound, picking up the win with five innings of work and just three runs allowed on nine punchouts.
SOFTBALL AREA TOURNAMENTS UNDERWAY
Orange Beach added more hardware to its collection over the weekend, sweeping the 4A Area 1 tournament on its home field with a pair of wins over Satsuma despite challenging Gulf Coast weather conditions. Aces MK McMullan and Kenlie Williams headlined the tournament with a combined perfect game in the circle with four total strikeouts. Shortstop Katie King led Orange Beach at the plate going a 4-for-6 with six RBIs and three home runs.
The Makos will now chase their sixth consecutive state championship — an AHSAA record — entering the 4A playoffs with a 39-1 record.
Orange Beach and St. Michael Catholic were the only Baldwin County programs to compete in area tournament action over the weekend. The county's remaining AHSAA softball teams will compete for postseason berths throughout the week.
Elsewhere, Daphne closed out its regular season with a 4-2 victory over Mobile Christian. And in Central Baldwin County, Robertsdale split its final week of regular-season play with a win over Cottage Hill Christian before falling to Spanish Fort.
Foley also picked up a narrow 7-6 win over Elberta to end a 16-19 season. The Lions and Golden Bears will join Daphne and Fairhope in the Class 7A Area 2 tournament at Founders Park.
Spanish Fort finished its regular season with a win, securing the county's second-best record at 33-12-1. The Lady Toros will travel down to Gulf Shores for the Class 6A Area 2 tournament, joining the host Dolphins, Baldwin County and McGill-Toolen.
