With postseason play underway on the diamond, several Baldwin County baseball teams are surging into the state playoffs while softball programs gear up for area tournaments that will shape their postseasons.
Less than a month is left before Blue Map Trophies are hoisted — so let's dive into some programs that are rallying together at the right time.
POSTSEASON BASEBALL ACTION
Starting with the last of the area champs on the baseball side, the Fairhope Pirates downed rival Daphne twice in a three-game series to clinch the 7A Area 2 title. The Pirates end the regular season with a county-best 25-10 record and host Central-Phenix City in Round 1 of the state playoffs.
Not too far away from the Pirates, Bayshore and Bayside both advanced in the opening rounds of the state playoffs. The Eagles swept Geneva County at home, while the Admirals took two out of three against W.S. Neal on the road.
Down on the beach, both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach baseball took care of business at home in the opening rounds of the postseason. The Makos dominated Jackson in two games by a combined score of 32-1, while the Dolphins handled Theodore at The Plex.
The only county team to fall in the opening round of the playoffs was Elberta, falling to Faith Academy in two games on the road.
Another team closing out the season on a high note was Robertsdale baseball. The Golden Bears swept area rival Foley in the final series of the year for both teams.
Round 2 of baseball playoffs (dates TBD):
SOFTBALL COMING TO A CLOSE
On the softball side, all programs prepare for area tournaments this week. Daphne softball highlighted play on the Eastern Shore, becoming the third county team to reach 30 wins. The Trojans took down Foley by 20 runs before narrowly defeating Saraland and Baker.
North of the Trojans, the Lady Toros of Spanish Fort split the week 1-1, falling to Orange Beach but getting a shutout win over Baldwin County. And down in the central region of the county, the Elberta Warriors continue to rise in the rankings with a 3-2 week to reach 15-15 on the season.
Fairhope softball had one of the longer weeks of any county team, going 5-2 with wins over area rivals Foley and Robertsdale. The Lady Golden Bears had a successful week at 3-2, with all three wins over county teams.
Wrapping up on the beach, the Gulf Shores Dolphins picked up a key 5-3 win over Fairhope in their lone contest last week. Just across the island, the powerhouse Orange Beach Makos went a perfect 8-0 on the week, outscoring opponents 101-4.
Softball area tournaments across the county are set to take place this week, May 1-4.
