UNDEFEATED STARTS
Spanish Fort softball turned in the most dominant start between the two sports, opening the season 3-0 at the Foley tournament. The Toros knocked off Tate (Fla.), Foley and Fairhope by a combined score of 27-3 to leave little doubt about their early-season expectations.
On the baseball side, St. Michael matched that 3-0 mark with wins over Gulf Shores and a pair against Foley. The Cardinals authored the weekend's most dramatic comeback in their opener against the Dolphins, erasing a 9-2 deficit entering the sixth inning by scoring nine unanswered runs to steal a road victory.
Those were the only unbeaten programs that played multiple games and remained perfect — Baldwin County softball also opened its season with a win, defeating Satsuma 13-6 to start 1-0.
Bayside baseball claimed two wins to begin the year 2-1, Fairhope softball bounced back from its loss to Spanish Fort with two additional victories at the Foley tournament, and Orange Beach baseball split its opening weekend matchups to start 1-1.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
For undefeated Spanish Fort softball, catcher and designated hitter Maddie Nelson sparked the offense with a 4-for-6 start to the year that included four RBIs, a home run, a triple and a double. In the circle, ace Mallarie Beagle worked five combined innings, allowing just one run while striking out five and earning a win.
St. Michael junior Cam Kerbl delivered on both sides of the ball in the Cardinals' 3-0 start. He earned the win in a 7-2 victory over Foley, tossing four innings while allowing two hits and two runs with nine strikeouts. At the plate, Kerbl finished 3-for-8 with four RBIs and a double.
Despite an 0-3 start for Daphne baseball, Brody McDavid provided a bright spot with a 6-for-9 performance at the plate to open the season.
From the leadoff spot, Foley shortstop Jamaya Bronson set the tone early and often, starting the season 7-for-12 at the plate with five runs scored.
Neveah James and Gulf Shores softball started 1-3, but James began the season 5-for-10 at the plate with two home runs, seven RBIs and a pair of doubles. The Middle Tennessee commit put together a five-RBI performance in the season-opening win for the Dolphins that included three hits and a home run.
Another one of the top single-game outings of the weekend came from Fairhope's Briley Bolden. The Pirates outfielder went 3-for-3 in a 10-0 win over Foley, launching a home run and a triple while driving in four runs and scoring three times. Orange Beach's Matthew Hoover also delivered a stellar single-game performance, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in a 13-3 season-opening win over Bayshore Christian.
