Baldwin County baseball and softball wrap-up: March 9-15

Posted

Another busy week of tournament play unfolded across Baldwin County as baseball and softball teams continued to find their footing midway through March.

With the first of three Gulf Coast Classic events taking place alongside other tournaments, many of the county's top teams continued to separate themselves while several standout players delivered impressive individual performances. The second installment of the Gulf Coast Classic is scheduled throughout this week, while the Orange Beach Mako softball is set to return home this coming weekend to host a tournament of their own.

TOP TEAMS

Speaking of the nation's top-ranked team, the Makos continued to show why they hold that distinction with a dominant 6-0 week that included five victories at the Dothan tournament. Orange Beach outscored opponents 34-2 during the tournament and finished the week with a 46-4 scoring margin. After entering the season ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps, the Makos quickly reclaimed the top spot behind a powerful offensive stretch that featured 16 extra-base hits, including six home runs.

Orange Beach baseball also found success during the opening Gulf Coast Classic of the season, splitting its two tournament games before putting together a five-home-run performance in a win over Fairhope at Volanta Park.

Gulf Shores softball took full advantage of hosting duties during the Gulf Coast Classic, playing six games during the tournament and finishing with a 4-2 record. The Dolphins narrowly missed tournament gold but capped the week by outscoring McGill-Toolen 31-0 in a double header. On the baseball diamond, Gulf Shores went 2-1 in the Classic with its lone loss coming against top-10 nationally ranked Tomball (Texas) before closing the week with an 11-0 victory over Robertsdale.

Daphne baseball benefited from a challenging early-season schedule and began to show growth with a 3-0 week, with all three victories coming against county opponents. On the softball side, the Trojans — ranked fifth in Alabama by MaxPreps — played only once but made it count with a decisive home-opening win over West Florida Tech.

St. Michael baseball dropped its first two Gulf Coast Classic games early in the week but rebounded with a pair of wins to maintain the county's top overall record at 10-4. Staying on the Eastern Shore, Fairhope baseball turned in one of the strongest showings among county programs during the Classic, going 3-0 in tournament play. Fairhope softball also had a successful week, finishing 3-1 in the softball side of the Classic before closing the week with an area victory over Robertsdale.

Spanish Fort softball was one of the handful of county programs that did not participate in the Gulf Coast Classic, but made the trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and produced a perfect 4-0 run at the Biloxi tournament.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES

Orange Beach pitcher Kenlie Williams delivered one of the most unique performances of the week by throwing a perfect game in an 11-0 win over Rehobeth. Williams needed just 43 pitches to complete the feat and did not record a strikeout, instead relying on 18 defensive putouts.

Makos ace MK McMullan nearly matched the effort in the team's final win of the week by allowing just one hit. McMullan logged 22 innings in the circle, did not allow an earned run or issue a walk and struck out 28. Offensively, Katie King paced the Makos with a 10-for-19 week that included eight RBIs and two home runs.

Gulf Shores outfielder Kayleigh Jacks delivered one of the top offensive performances in the county by hitting for the cycle in a 17-3 win over Summertown. Jacks finished that game 4-for-4 with three RBIs, a double, a triple and a home run. She also closed the week 16-for-21 at the plate with 13 RBIs, four doubles, three triples and two home runs for one of the best weeks we have seen out of any county athlete thus far.

On the baseball side, Gulf Shores pitcher John Luke Stephens continued a strong senior campaign with a complete-game shutout against Robertsdale. Stephens allowed just three hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts, marking his second complete-game shutout of the season. Teammate Trendon Beebe also provided offensive support by going 9-for-17 with seven RBIs, two doubles and a triple last week.

Orange Beach baseball standouts Colton Boyd and Ward Hickman powered the Makos' offense throughout the week and combined for all five home runs in the victory over Fairhope. Boyd hit two while Hickman blasted three. Boyd finished the week 5-for-10 with a double, two home runs and five RBIs, while Hickman went 4-for-9 with three RBIs and three home runs.

Daphne junior Ryan Parent produced a strong all-around performance, going 4-for-9 at the plate with four RBIs while also earning a win on the mound against Elberta. Parent pitched four innings without allowing an earned run, striking out four with just three walks.

Fairhope softball's Ava Grace Miller delivered a consistent week at the plate, going 8-for-14 with three doubles and two RBIs. Snook Christian Academy's Savannah Clayton also impressed in her team's opening week by going 7-for-11 with three doubles.

Spanish Fort baseball's Andrew Salmon went 5-for-11 with three RBIs and four doubles, all of which came during back-to-back games against Saraland. On the softball side, Alex Shoemaker led the Lady Toros during their 4-0 week by going 6-for-13 with five RBIs and a triple, while Mallerie Beagle tossed a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win over Pass Christian (Miss.).

St. Michael softball's Addison Pratt delivered a dominant all-around outing in a 10-0 win over Pine Forest, going 3-for-3 at the plate while also throwing a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts. On the baseball side, Brayden Smith helped the Cardinals remain atop the county standings by going 7-for-12 with three RBIs while also contributing four innings on the mound with six strikeouts.
