In the heat of area play, sweeps and upsets over powerhouse teams highlighted a busy week across Baldwin County baseball and softball.
The standings are becoming crowded at the top, and area regular-season champions are starting to be crowned. Let's dive into the best teams and performances late in the regular season.
TOP TEAMS
Fairhope baseball stayed atop the county standings, improving to 19-8 as it looks to become the first county baseball team to reach 20 wins this season. The Pirates picked up four wins this past week, starting with a shutout over Baldwin County and ending with a sweep of area rival Foley.
The Lady Pirates went 3-0-1 last week with an area win over Foley as well. Fairhope softball is now 19-6-1 on the season and has sole possession of the Class 7A Area 1 lead.
North of the Pirates on the Eastern Shore, Spanish Fort softball became the first team to reach 30 wins in the county following a 4-2 week. The Lady Toros ended the week on a three-game winning streak, and coach Jonathan Rasberry reached the milestone of 100 wins with the program.
Daphne softball had a 3-1 week that inched it closer to 30 wins as well, and the Trojans baseball bounced back from a three-game losing skid with three wins over area rival Robertsdale.
Bayside and Bayshore baseball both had solid weeks on the diamond as well, to round out the top half of the county. The Admirals swept an area series over St. Michael, and the Eagles took down Bayside before sweeping area opponent Clarke County.
Snook Christian had a 3-0 week, dominating opponents despite the Eagles' struggles in the standings this season. The Eagles run-ruled both Sparta Academy and Atmore Christian before ending the week with a hard-fought 7-4 win over Central Christian.
Elberta softball was another program that redeemed a three-game skid with three straight wins. The Lady Warriors swept LeFlore before edging UMS-Wright to end the week.
Heading down to the beach, Orange Beach softball took its first loss in 45 games, falling to nationally ranked South Warren (Ky.) 6-1. The Lady Makos did bounce back with a pair of run-rule wins over Baker and Robertsdale to close a 4-1 week and move to 28-1. They also earned a unanimous No. 1 ranking across all major national polls this past week.
Mako baseball went a perfect 3-0 on the week to extend a five-game winning streak. Orange Beach baseball took down Leroy and Satsuma (twice) by a run total of 34-2. The Makos will take on Bayside this coming week for the Class 4A Area 1 regular-season title.
Rounding out the week on the beach was Gulf Shores baseball going 3-0, including a sweep over Baldwin County that improved the Dolphins to 3-1 in Class 6A Area 2 as they prepare to take on McGill-Toolen this coming week for the title. Head coach Chris Jacks joined Rasberry with a career accomplishment as well, reaching 200 career wins.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
Hill Simms had a solid week at the plate to lead Bayshore baseball, going 4-for-9 with four runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Teammate Ben Mayo had a great week on the mound as well, tossing 6.1 total innings in relief with zero earned runs and eight punchouts.
Cooper Mason led the Bayside offense with a 6-for-11 week at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a double. Ace Wyatt Williams pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and zero earned runs in a 7-1 win over St. Michael.
Jack Davidson had a tremendous week with the bat for Daphne baseball, going 8-for-10 with seven RBIs and two doubles. The Trojans corner infielder also pitched in relief twice in the series sweep over Robertsdale, tossing 3.1 total innings with zero earned runs and five punchouts. Ace Parker Cranmore also posted a complete game with five strikeouts and no earned runs in a 13-3 win over the Golden Bears.
For Daphne softball, Claire Senese led the offense with a 7-for-15 week at the dish that included three runs scored and three stolen bases. Reese McCormick nearly tossed a perfect game from the circle in an 11-0 win over Foley, giving up just one hit and one walk in a 12-punchout performance. Braylyn Swann tossed a complete-game shutout against Baldwin County as well in a 2-0 victory.
Lance Wade had a very consistent week for Fairhope baseball in the leadoff spot, going 10-for-15 at the plate with four RBIs and a double. Addison Russell pitched another stellar week in the circle for the Lady Pirates, tossing 14.2 total innings with 13 punchouts and just one earned run. The Fairhope softball ace also went 7-for-16 at the plate with eight RBIs and three home runs.
Spanish Fort softball had plenty of standouts in a long week, but it was Alexa Nance continuing her power surge at the plate to highlight it. Nance went 8-for-19 at the plate with 15 RBIs, a double and four home runs in the 4-2 week for the Lady Toros. Teammate Jayla Harris also had one of the top individual game performances with a 4-for-4 day at the plate that included a pair of home runs and five RBIs in a 17-7 win over Satsuma.
LK May led Elberta softball's rise in the standings this past week. The Lady Warriors infielder went 5-for-9 at the dish with seven RBIs, a pair of doubles and a triple.
In the undefeated week for Gulf Shores baseball, ace John Luke Stephens tossed another complete-game shutout on the mound. The senior threw six innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four in a 13-0 win over Baldwin County. The Dolphins had one of the best overall offensive performances of the week in that win as well, collecting 14 hits.
Mako baseball had an undefeated week as well, highlighted by Matthew Hoover going 5-for-9 at the plate with six RBIs and three doubles. The senior ace also tossed a complete-game shutout in a 13-0 win over Satsuma, striking out six and allowing just three hits.
For the nation's top-ranked softball team, Orange Beach, Katie King had an 8-for-17 week at the plate with 13 RBIs, one double and three home runs. MK McMullan also tossed another complete-game shutout, collecting 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Satsuma. Jayde Palmer also had a great individual game performance for the Lady Makos, going 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs in a 17-7 win over Baker.
