ROBERTSDALE —Alma-Bryant came into Robertsdale and spoiled the Golden Bears’ senior festivities with a 40-12 road victory.

The Hurricane defense stepped up and stole five takeaways between three interceptions and two fumble recoveries where one of each was returned for a touchdown.

“I was very impressed with our defense to hold them down the way they did,” Alma-Bryant head football coach Bart Sessions said after the game. “Other than opening kick where we let them get out midfield, we did a good job pinning them back, and our defense executed.”

James’ hat trick paces Hurricane offense

On the other side of the ball, sophomore Jayden James registered a trio of rushing touchdowns and senior Landon Pace caught a 42-yard score from freshman Makai Vongsengphachanh as the Hurricanes took a lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

“Offensively, it was bumpy early, but man, those kids came to play,” Sessions said.

Robertsdale’s struggles

Although Robertsdale opened the scoring with a 15-yard rushing touchdown from junior running back Micah Hardy, the Golden Bears didn’t score again until the fourth quarter. Freshman Desmon Rogers capped the scoring when he delivered a 5-yard touchdown on the ground.

The sluggish offense has plagued Robertsdale for most of the season. Since winning their Week 2 matchup against Elberta, the Golden Bears have been outscored by their opponents 271-67.

Up next

Alma-Bryant improved to 2-6 overall with a 2-4 mark within Class 7A Region 1. The Hurricanes are scheduled to host their final region game of the season when the Foley Lions (4-4, 2-4) come to town in Week 10.

“We want to be better next Friday night than we were this Friday night,” Sessions said. “As long as we’re doing that, the scoreboard is really an illusion. We just want to be improving as a program, and I think our kids will come out this week and have a great week of practice.”

Robertsdale fell to 2-7 overall with an 0-6 record in region play. The Golden Bears are set to hit the road for their regular-season finale against the Daphne Trojans (6-3, 4-2) next week.
