Daphne High School senior Aubrey Gregg set a school record last week in a 48-20 win over Foley, throwing for 423 yards and six touchdowns to help the Trojans' flag football team improve to 4-0 on the season.

The standout performance earned Gregg an AHSAA Flag Football Spotlight for Week 2.

Gregg is no stranger to the flag football scene, now in her second season as the Trojans’ starting quarterback. She threw for 2,078 yards during her first year in 2024 and has already tallied 974 yards and 19 touchdowns through four games this fall. She has now thrown 51 career touchdown passes.

Head coach Jenny Laird said the experience of her veteran group has made a difference in the Trojans’ hot start.

"Our first year of playing, we were primarily sophomores," Laird said. "So now, as seniors, this group is experienced not just with playing the sport but also with each other on the flag field.”

Gregg has been at the center of that growth. While her arm strength has always been evident, Laird said her quarterback’s connection with her receivers has made the offense more dangerous this season.

“Over the years," Gregg said, "my decision making skills on where to throw the football and when to throw it have become a lot sharper. I am able to make these decisions quicker, and it has made me a more effective passer overall.”

The Trojans’ weapons on the outside include one of the nation’s top-ranked flag football players in Abby Johnson. The senior leads the team with 344 receiving yards and eight touchdowns and has also picked off three passes on defense.

Gregg had high praise for Johnson, crediting her for being a reason she has been able to break records like she did against Foley. Gregg and Johnson have played football together for four years now and softball for as long as they can remember.

“Abby J is a dog. Point blank. Plain and simple,” Laird said. “Doesn’t matter if she’s on the court, field or diamond, she wants to compete with her teammates against the team on the other side. She really is special — on the field, court, diamond or off of them all. She’s a gem any way you look at her.”

Johnson headlines a talented receiving corps that also features seniors Dasia Matt (308 yards, seven touchdowns) and Haile Moorer (149 yards), as well as sophomore Mikera Baldwin, who has three catches for 52 yards — all of which went for touchdowns.

Part of Daphne’s success stems from the versatility its players bring from other sports. Gregg currently plays two sports and still finds success with the books, ranked at the top of her senior class. The Daphne star said the late nights of practice and homework are difficult at times but have shaped her into the person she is today. Coach Laird said the Trojans have five three-sport athletes and 10 who play two sports.

“It absolutely pays off for us in multiple facets of the game,” Laird said. “Each kid brings in different qualities from other sports and has turned into this melting pot of really athletic kids that each bring a little bit of something else to our game.”

Ranked No. 4 in Alabama and No. 114 nationally by MaxPreps, Daphne will look to extend its unbeaten run Sept. 10 with a doubleheader against Satsuma and Williamson at Jubilee Stadium.
