AHSAA soccer coaches polls shift as Baldwin County playoff race intensifies

Posted

As the prep soccer coaches polls continue to shift entering the final weeks of the regular season, a mix of late surges, statement wins and narrow setbacks have reshaped the postseason outlook for teams across Baldwin County.

With limited matches remaining, several local programs are either solidifying their playoff positions or fighting to climb into favorable spots. Let's dive into the ranked teams in the latest polls, including a few notable teams that missed the cut.

BOYS RANKINGS

Again, Foley remains the only 7A ranked program in both the boys and girls polls. The Lions split the week at home, 1-1, handling Davidson before being narrowed, 2-1, by the No. 3-ranked team in 5A, Faith Academy.

The Foley boys continue to climb the MaxPreps rankings as well, coming in as the No. 17 team in the state. After one final home game next week against Alma Bryant, the Lions will end the season on the road with 7A rival Fairhope.

Gulf Shores moved back up from No. 9 to No. 8 in the 6A boys polls following a 2-0 week on the pitch with wins over Elberta and Citronelle. The Dolphins now own the top spot in Baldwin County at 15-5-3 and are ranked among the top 40 teams in the state, according to MaxPreps.

Dolphins midfielder Webb Ronan is still pacing the attack as well with the second-most assists in the country at 24, adding 12 goals as well. Senior forward Duhel Nathanel leads the team in goals with 17 on the year.

Staying put at No. 10 in 6A is Spanish Fort once again. The Toros have found a level of consistency that lives up to their winning standard, taking down Baldwin County, Faith Academy and Baker last week.

Senior captain Jake Bauer is dominating the attack with 26 goals this season, which is good enough to place him in the top 15 of scorers in the state. Spanish Fort is currently on an eight-game win streak with two games left in the regular season.

Falling one spot down to No. 5 in the 5A polls was St. Michael Catholic. The Cardinals fell to 5A Area 1 rival Bayside Academy, 3-2, and have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since the second week of the season.St. Michael is certainly filling the box score in its matchups nonetheless, as juniors Jake Lazzari and Raphael Duchesne combine for 55 goals this season, both top 10 in the state. Captain Lazzari is also top 10 in assists with 15 this year.

The Makos also kept their spot at No. 10 in the 4A polls. The Orange Beach boys split the week, 1-1, in area play, taking down Satsuma before falling to the No. 3 4A squad, St. Luke's.

The most notable unranked boys squad in the county this week is undoubtedly Fairhope. The Pirates have won nine of their last 10 matches, beating ranked St. Luke's and Spanish Fort during that stretch. Fairhope will end the year with a ranked St. Michael, followed by area rival Foley, the only team it suffered a loss to in the dominant 10-game stretch.

GIRLS RANKINGS

The Lady Toros have kept the No. 6 spot in the 6A girls polls for three weeks now. Spanish Fort is coming off a short week that saw a 5-0 victory over area opponent Baldwin County. They eye the elusive Blue Map trophy with a ranked St. Luke's team and rival Gulf Shores down the stretch.

St. Michael's girls moved up one spot in the 5A girls polls to No. 6 after taking down area rival Bayside Academy. The Lady Cardinals have ranked opponents Bayshore Christian and St. Luke's left on the schedule as they look to return to the state title game after finishing runner-up in 2025.

Reigning supreme at the top of the 4A polls once again is Orange Beach, coming off a 1-1 week. The Lady Makos dominated area opponent Satsuma, 10-0, before being narrowed, 2-0, by St. Luke's later in the week. The Lady Makos are 13-3-1 and tied for the highest overall MaxPreps ranking in the county with the Foley boys at No. 17.

Bayshore Christian's girls dropped one spot in the 1-3A polls to No. 5 following an 0-2 week that featured a loss to newly ranked Mobile Christian. The Lady Eagles will look to bounce back with Blount next week before ending with a tough stretch against Bayside and St. Michael.

Taking down the 16-0 Elberta girls for the first time this season was Bayside Academy, coming away with a 1-0 area win over the Lady Warriors. Elberta again misses out on the 5A coaches polls despite the overall record and top-25 state ranking. The Lady Warriors will end the year with a dominant Orange Beach squad followed by Saraland.

Another notable team on the rise on the girls side is Fairhope. With no team in the county ranked in the 7A girls polls, the Lady Pirates have gained momentum late in the year with a four-game win streak that brings their record to 6-4-2. Fairhope's girls will try to sweep both area rivals Daphne and Robertsdale before ending the year with St. Luke's.
