As the holiday season unfolds, it brings a mix of joy, reflection and the inevitable busyness that defines this time of year.
Lists become central to the season — whether it's jotting down gift ideas, planning gatherings or sending holiday cards. But amid the flurry of activities and introspection, there's a quieter reality: not everyone experiences this season as a time of celebration.
For many, the holidays can stir feelings of loneliness, anxiety or sadness, sometimes exacerbated by the very reflection the season encourages. These internal struggles can go unnoticed, overshadowed by the hustle of year-end festivities.
This year, experts urge people to add one more important item to their list: awareness of the warning signs of suicide. According to The Jason Foundation, a national leader in youth and young adult suicide prevention, four out of five people who die by suicide exhibit one or more warning signs beforehand. Recognizing these signs can save lives.
Warning signs include verbal threats of suicide, persistent depression, increased irritability, sudden changes in appetite or personal appearance and a noticeable lack of interest in activities once enjoyed. Each individual's experience is unique, and signs may manifest differently. A more comprehensive list of warning signs and detailed explanations is available on The Jason Foundation's website, www.jasonfoundation.com.
For those experiencing suicidal thoughts — or for anyone concerned about a friend or family member — help is available. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support 24/7 through phone or text. Additionally, The Trevor Project offers specialized resources for LGBTQ individuals, accessible by calling 1-800-488-7386 or texting START to 678-678.
The Jason Foundation also provides educational resources and training on suicide prevention, offering tools to recognize and address potential warning signs. Visit their website to learn more or locate an Affiliate Office nearby.
