Bayne Snyder and his family will present the program at the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship on Sunday, May 27. It will be titled “The Living Memory Garden and Memorial Day.” The public is invited to attend.
To honor and memorialize his wife, Annabelle, who died in 2006, Snyder and his family committed themselves to the design, construction and planting of a multi-use garden on the Fellowship grounds. This was made possible by generous contributions from friends, family and members of the Fellowship.
In Sunday’s program, this ongoing project will be dedicated, and its history and role in memorializing Unitarian members will be presented. The Back Porch Folk Singers will provide musical memories of Annabelle, who was a charter member of that music group 20 years ago.
The garden design features an enclosed area that will eventually be shaded by arching Japanese crepe myrtles. A number of colorful and scented native and ornamental shrubs are used as accents to unify the plantings. At one end of the oval a solar powered fountain presides, flanked by two benches to provide an area for perspective and for meditation, matched by another pair at the opposite end.
In addition to catering to the senses and the spirit of the visitor, the plant selections were made to attract birds and butterflies.
The chosen name, “The Living Memory Garden,” reflects the basic human desire to appreciate the web of life that surrounds us. At the same time, the plants in the garden are symbolic of the memories people leave and the ways they will be remembered.
The dimensions of the garden make it suitable for group gatherings such as youth activities, weddings and picnics.
The Unitarian Fellowship meets each Sunday at 11 a.m. at 1150 Fairhope Ave., across from the Fairhope Satellite Courthouse. Youth Fellowship and toddler care are available at the same time, 11 to noon. For more information please call the Fellowship at 929-3207.
