Town of Summerdale purchasing downtown property

SUMMERDALE - The Summerdale Town Council voted at its Nov. 8 meeting to purchase property in the downtown area. The property is located across the street from the Summerdale Public Library and the current fire station. The purchase cost was $32,000. The title work and appraisals were completed prior to the council meeting. The property is approximately a quarter block.

Plans for the location include the possible construction of a new senior center with parking.

“The library would be right across the street and there the senior center would be more central,” said Mayor David Wilson. “That’s the direction that I’ve been thinking and wanted to run by the council.”

Council member Cheryl Stewart supports the idea of an updated senior center, but voiced concerns that the location would not allow for enough parking. Wilson said that was just one suggestion, but the town council could choose to place something else at the location as well.

“We’re not locked into a senior center to buy the property,” he said. “We’re not locked into that by the deed.”

Wilson said whether they decide to build a new senior center or update the existing location, he would like to pursue grants in the future to assist in upgrading the Summerdale Senior Center. The current fiscal year budget includes $5,000 to purchase more activities and games to be added to the senior center.

“This is something that we can work towards and get the numbers up and see that it’s going to be an active program,” Wilson said. “If we can get this program built up I see a big future for the senior programs here in Summerdale.”
